The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay

Read the book and disagree with me. I dare you.

As long as they get Stan Lee to play himself, Russel Crowe to play the insane Antartic officer, and Rachel Leigh Cook to play Rosa, they SHOULD make it into a movie. Casting the two main guys would be a problem though. I say get Mel Brooks to play the magician mentor in Prague. That's the sort of movie where you could have all sorts of neat cameo roles.

Apparently it has already been optioned. Chabon is putting together a treatment as we speak.

From www.michaelchabon.com

I'm still adapting K&C for Paramount Pictures and Scott Rudin, the producer of Wonder Boys. I just (9-17-01) turned in the third draft. The wondrous Mr. Rudin does not seem inclined to fire me; not yet, at least. Still no cast or director.

You should really check out the entire site. It is quite facinating.

Fucking YES!

Here's a tough question the filmmakers will have to answer: Who should they get to actually draw the art for the various characters? Who should draw/paint for Joe and Sam and Rosa? I'm not really up on current comic artists.

Also, who should play Dali (and they MUST keep the party sequence intact. I loved Dali's cameo appearance.)? Is Kevin Kline too old to play the younger Dali seen in the book?

I love the book and I honestly don't know how they would turn it into a movie. They would have to lose so much - it's such a big book. So, I sort of hope they don't do it. However, if they do, I'll of course be there on opening day.

there was an article in EW about this recently. apparently he's a screenwriter turned novelist, so hopefully he'll have a better grasp on what to keep and what to eject than if they just handed it off to some other writer. but then again, it could make it twice as hard for him since he's so close to the material. either way, it's something i too would like to see.

Scott Rudin though... not sure how i feel about that

Personally, I'd like to see them find someone from the golden or silver age to do the drawings. I'm not sure which legendary artists are still with us from that era, so it would be a tough call on who exactly, but surely they can find someone. I just don't think any of the modern guys could do it justice. Besides, the whole book is a throwback to the old days and it would seem sort of blasphemous to use a modern artist in "emulating" that period, rather than someone who came FROM that period.

Eisner?

I could see Eisner - actually, he might be the best choice of anyone. The man has been so influential to the whole medium. Good call!

Did anyone get to see Chabon's reading of Kavalier & Clay at Symphony Space in NY last night? I read that he was there with Wes Anderson and did Q&A with the crowd afterwards.

Anderson would be an interesting choice to direct Kavalier and Clay, actually. That could be really cool.

Oh shit. If Wes Anderson did this film, I think I'd probably have to wet myself with excitement.

anderson isn't the right director to handle the material. I, personalluy, think he'd fuck it up.

Gotta go with Kevin on this.

Personally, I think the book would be better adapted as an 'I Claudius' BBC-type special, and cut into the parts—"A couple of boy geniuses," and so on.

I dunno - is John Byrne considered "modern"? I wish I could find a list of comic artists and whether or not they're alive; Gil Kane would seem like a natural to do the art if he's still with us. Herb Trimpe had a great neo-Kirby style that worked really well too. And Jerry Ordway emulated the Golden Age without copying it in All-Star Squadron back in the 80s.

Sorry to bring up old threads like this, but this morning while I was in the shower I got to thinking about this possible movie. (Don't ask me why it came to my head while taking a shower, I'm really not sure myself)

Who would you get to star in this? Honestly, I have a hard time coming up with anyone to play any of the characters during any period of the film. I guess that's why I'm not a casting agent. What are your thoughts?

Rachel Leigh Cook-Rosa/Luna Moth
Russell Crowe-Shannenhouse
Mel Brooks-Kornblum
Kevin Kline-Dali
Liev Schrieber-Orson Welles
Stan Lee-Himself
Robbie Coltrane-Anapol
AND Jude Law as the Escapist.

Bumping again, sorry.

Just read this, and I'm into following this baby's progress to the big screen.

From his site, the mention of his involvement with the adaptation of the screenplay has been changed to this:

"I'm still adapting The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier &Clay for Paramount Pictures and Scott Rudin, the producer of Wonder Boys. Sydney Pollack has attached himself to the project as director. "

Pollack... certainly not an exciting choice.

Thoughts?

Stiller and Law suck as the leads, by the way. They are just too damn old. And there's no way in hell I can see Jennifer Connelly in the role of Rosa.

Jason Schwartzman as Sammy. I think that's a better fit.

Regarding my earlier post, I think that Tom Sizemore would do a much better job of Anapol than Robbie Coltrane. And I think Peter O'Toole, after watching him on Max Bickford, would do a great job as George Deasy.

Pollak is boring. With him, Law, Stiller, and Connely, a project like this says: GIVE US THE FUCKIN' OSCAR ALREADY.

I was thinking Rachel Leigh Cook for Rosa, she's always been my first choice, but after watching that semi-entertaining film called AntiTrust , I am starting to have second thoughts. She seems to have two notes: quietly happy and quietly sad.

But Connelly is just WRONG. Maybe Natalie Portman could do something with it.

Pollack used to be good. Dare I say great up until Out of Africa. Then the ol' nosedive began -- Havana, Sabrina, and Random Hearts (sure The Firm is in there, but that was almost idiot-proof).
