Lord Of The Flies should be done properly.

I'd like to see a very faithful adaptation done of William Golding's finest novel.

I can't criticise the 1963 version having never seen it, but the 1990 version, while certainly ambitious, made too many bad decisions.

Firstly, they should all be English, just like in the novel. Not that I'm English myself, but it's important in the novel (the wartime jingoism of Ralph etc).

In the 1990 movie, having just arrived on the island, the boys were already calling each other shit-for-brains and such. This is just plain wrong as it suggests they are already somewhat corrupt, and by society, not by their innate evil. The point of the story is that they lose the goodness and innocence impressed on them by the laws of society.

The characters, or at least the main ones, should look like their descriptions in the novel. Jack should be red-haired (suggesting a temper) ugly and generally unpleasant looking, perhaps a young Chris Owen. I see Ralph as looking like Henry Thomas twenty years ago.

Finally, and this is a touchy subject, but there's the issue of nudity. In the novel the discarding of school uniforms and all clothes symbolised the shedding of a rule-bound society, so it made complete sense. For a movie though this issue would have to be handled very sensibly. You can't exactly have a load of naked children running round on a beach.

How would you suggest a Lord Of The Flies movie should be done?

Watch the 1963 version. It Is one of the most disturbing films ever. And very faithful.

If the book was to be set in modern times(which it could), the children should be American. Why, you ask? because the children represent Western civilization. When Golding wrote LORD OF THE FLIES, British children who attended to boarding school still considered themselves the most civilized on the planet. More importantly, the West was not yet dominated by American culture. In this century, however, the child-symbol of Western civilization would be American.

Nonsense. Piggy was being called a fatty well before the school-boys landed on the Island. Which also means that I think your main point for the story is wrong. It is, really. The evil is just as pervasive in the 'civilized' world off the Island. Remember the ending? Golding contrasts the 'savagery' the boys resort to b with a warship. The Island is our world, the actions are symptoms of cultural disease, and the boys symbolic of Western civilization. Society and this "innate evil" are completely intertwined.

Tattered uniforms, or ritualistic garb would suffice.
