Well, they should have allowed Barker to make the film properly in the first place, but I agree... a NIGHTBREED trilogy (done right) would own all.

And how was Barker kept from delivering the movie he wanted? Were studio concessions required? Major editing? What's the story?
Got this from the IMDB:
Director Clive Barker was reportedly required to cut the film down to 101 minutes from the original 126 minute cut by distributor 20th Century Fox. They felt that this cut was too long and rather too explicit for an R-rated release. Also, Barker shot additional scenes with David Cronenberg's Decker character to flesh out his mentality. The excised footage consisted of some very graphic gore during the climax, disturbing images in the monsters' lair and quite a bit of "unnecessary" character development. There were also some strange sexual themes between the monsters and Boone that wound up on the cutting room floor.

A scene filmed in stop-motion animation, but deleted from the film, has a leopard woman riding a dinosaur-like creature through Median.

Writer/Director Clive Barker is reportedly preparing a restored "Director's Cut" of the film for DVD release

Hammerin' Sickle did a good job of running down the screw-job Fox did to the film, so I'll shed some light on the basis behind the proposed sequels:

At the end of CABAL/NIGHTBREED, Midian is in ruins. Baphomet has been destroyed... and most of the monsters have been slaughtered in the battle with the humans.

Because Boone is who ultimately brought this doom and destruction upon Midian & Baphomet (which was also predicted in the prophecies) he is "christened" as "CABAL" and is charged with finding a new safe-haven for the monsters and basically re-building Midian. He gets stronger and stronger in power and essentially replaces Baphomet as the "god" and leader of the tribe of monsters.

Initially, there would only be about a dozen or so monsters left after the fall of Midian (including Peloquin, Kinski, and other faves) but as they cross the country-side they meet up with other monsters and freaks in their adventures.

Would have been COOL as all hell, needless to say.

There was also a cool cross-over graphic novel that was basically "Hellraiser vs Nightbreed". Called "JIHAD", it basically told the tale of one of the Nightbreed opening up the lament configuration box... thus "inviting" the cenobites into the world of the Nightbreed and all hell breaks loose. Then a rogue cenobite sees this as a chance to gain ultimate power and he turns on Pinhead and the others. So, Pinhead teams up with Boone and the 'Breed to take on this rogue Cenobite. Pretty cool stuff, with nice painted artwork.

The comic book Nightbreed went from 1-25 with a crossover to the Hellraiser comic called Jihad 1&2. Try e-bay, that's where I bought most of mine. Some were good and some weren't, but they took off folowing Cabal and the Nightbreed as they tried to find a new Midian like the sequels would have if the first movie didn't tank. The deleted footage from Nightbreed was released by Morgan Creek and is now in the hands of the company that just put out the bare bones DVD. There was talk of a directors cut with a Clive Barker commentary and having Danny Elfman come in and do some more music for the found footage later this year. I hope they sold enough copies so that they think they can make some money off of a special edition. There is a good chance anyway.

That sequel idea..is it something Barker has written? Or just from your vast storehouse of knowledge?
Both. Well, kinda. Barker likely has notes all fleshed out (which could have been the basis for the short-lived NIGHTBREED comic series that davidtoy mentioned) but he never actually WROTE any full-fledged sequels. However, he's openly discussed these ideas for years and I personally picked his brain for about 20-30 minutes on all things Nightbreed when I got a chance to chat with him at Dragon*Con '97.

Is that graphic novel still in print?
No, but they're not exactly expensive either. I suggest you do as davidtoy says and scour eBay or local comic shops. You can probably get your hands on most/all of this stuff at decent prices.
