A GOOD Dune movie.

Personally I loved the books. The first movie didn't do them justice, and I found the mini-series to be far too artsy for my tastes.

Dune requires action, drama, and just a little bit of purism to keep the story from going horribly wrong.

"ITS RAINING" what shit
What do ya say people?

I say, "No."

I like both versions just fine, actually. Point out 100 problems with either version and I'll agree. I like 'em anyway.

Lynch's verison is spot on perfect for a film.

Never read the books so I can't comment on that aspect.

It's had 2 chances. That's more than most get.

Lynch's Dune has a lot of narrative problems but captures the atmosphere of the book perfectly. Too bad effects technology was to primitive back in '84 to really do justice to the story. And Lynch couldn't direct action if his life depended on it. But the art direction is perfect, the cast stellar and I really dig the Toto music score.

The mini series was spectacularly flat. Terrible idea to shoot all the exteriors in soundstages and I still believe that they managed to have less character development in 4 1/2 hours than Lynch had in 2.

I'd love to see a new movie version and I have a theory of how they could add a new layer to the story. Yes, it is a tragedy similar to ancient Greek theatre and Shakespeare but the story of Muad'Dib also has parallels to the Godfather. Both stories are about a powerful family in which the honourable and much-loved patriarch is eliminated and it's up to the well-meaning son to take his place. In both cases he succeeds in saving the family but loses his soul and humanity in the process. I'd really like to see this.

More than anything I'd like to see the story progress beyond Dune, into Messiah, and even Children. After that it goes a bit far into the future for a movie to connect as a sequal.

The sound stage work in the miniseries was interesting in the way they made it look, but not really effective in portraying anything more than sand with a few blue gel's in the lights.

I agree that the cast of the 84 one was good. The only thing that REALLY bugged me was that they changed the ending to the point where it didn't make sence, and that put a sour taste in my mouth. Beyond that I think the movie is ok. Were they to mix the two together, a great movie might have been made. The scenery and cast of the first, and the script and direction of the second.

I think the "lost his soul" interpretation is a bit off though. Paul lost his innocence more than anything. He still belived in justice, and law at the end, it was just life had hardened him. I guess it's kind of left at the end of the first book as him being kind of brutal, but if you go on to the next one you see what kind of leader he really is.
