LIQUID LUNCH, the new Lucky Nightsticks steamer!

After the surprisingly negative (but I appreciate the comments!) response to NO ONE SPECIAL (HERE: http://chud.nexcess.net/board/ubbhtml/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=47;t=000017 ) I present another challenging little tune, LIQUID LUNCH.

For what it's worth, this is not only the sequel to the awesome instrumental BEDLAM & BREAKFAST on EXPLODER but it also continues the movie theme (last record had a song devoted to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) this time with a tune about FIGHT CLUB.

LIQUID LUNCH

Dischord is what's going on inside, dog eared and tattered
Innocence is broken down and cold, a fossil fuel

Why try to save it when it's no longer alive
breathes in wet breaths, afraid to lie
but not afraid to die

Nice and abrasive, punish me clean
find the pain and bury it deep
heightened senses through clenched teeth

Open your eyes and chest
Let me inside of you
Paper bag contains our liquid lunch
We feed on it, it feeds on us
We're sinning and it's wonderful
It's the new frontier

Nice and abrasive, punish me clean
find the pain and bury it deep
heightened senses through clenched teeth

Drained silhouettes in a tight space, the alleyway consumes us all
the glint of knife blade flashes and synapses spring to full

We don't understand it, we don't need to

Wet pavement feels like a coffin, the moon guides us all home
a quick glance from the pavement and synapses, they spring to full
Gotta rinse out the blood and spittle, got to snap the joints in place
Give a hand to the beaten and battered before damaging your face

We don't understand it, we don't need to

Hemmoraging in the back seat with the last poet iconoclast
feed off his imagination, bleed out and make it last
Gotta stifle a leak in the cortex, got to wipe the memory clean
Let free the words trapped in throats and deliver all the dreams

We don't understand it, we don't need to

Drums, Guitar: Murphy
Vocals, keys: Nunziata

Still not quite as perfect as In Plain Sight, but next to that...it's my favorite Nightsticks tune ever.

If BEDLAM & BREAKFAST is good, then this is great. The whole song works for me, from intro to outro. I'm still a little thrown off by the segues, but I've decided that's because I'm used to the Floyd-esque build-ups to a change in melody. LIQUID LUNCH begs to be blasted by my home stereo. It also needs to be heard with headphones to pick out all the layers. When can this happen?

It's nice to see QUALITY movie-inspired songs.

One thing, tho....I know he's done a lot of drumming, but it seems like Steve has a really reduced role musically speaking on this CD based on what I've heard so far. Especially on this song.

Most of the songs appear to be based on your keyboard musings or Makarewicz's funk vamps.

Any particular reason why the Murph is so scarce this time around?

Scarce?

He's all over the place!

There's 16 songs, and Steve's on 14 of them!
I meant...composing music. Playing more guitar. Stuff like that.

I guess the new LN direction is more keys, so his role would be minimized by default.

I've co-written most of the songs, so I don't understand what you mean, M. Just because there's more keys doesn't mean the Nightsticks sit around waiting for Nick to come up with stuff.

It just so happens that when we do write, Nick is usually on the keyboard and John and/or I are on the drums, but we're throwing out ideas, or picking up a guitar later on.

PKG is very guitar driven. Nightsticks is not.

I'm basing this on what I've heard so far.

Chad the Lizard - no show.
Liquid Lunch - there for part of the song, but don't hear you playing guitar on a good bit of it. Don't know if you wrote any of the music or not.
Blood Gulch - just drums...didn't write any of the music
No One Special - no show
Beyond the Bones - drums....didn't write any of the music
We Are - guitar...but didn't write any of the music.
Dust to Dust - plays guitar and co-writes some of the music.
Bloodless - may play guitar on the finished version, but didn't write any of the music.
Mental Paradise - played some guitar and co-wrote the music.

Out of EIGHT songs I've heard so far, you co-wrote 2 (or 25 percent) of them. Granted, you play guitar on half of the stuff, but it's mostly backgroundish stuff.

I just miss the Murph. I know the Nightsticks aren't "a guitar band," but it seems like your presence is minimized on this CD so far.

Oh, and I'm bumping CHAD to the video game album.
I haven't heard those (except for Bloodless, which I already noted he didn't have much to do with), but look forward to them and hearing more of Steve.

Also, in keeping with tradition, is "Levitator," the song, going to be the lone rocker on this record?

Levitator is a mellow, moody song. Nothing too rock on this CD.

Interesting....I remember you saying three songs in that this was going to be a more aggressive record, and then you guys do a 180, which is fine with me.

I like a good bit of what I've heard so far.

It's much more aggressive, confident. You'll see, James.

To get this thread back on the song itself, I'd like to say this thing is even better to listen to on headphones. Especially the airy part that begins a little before the 3-minute mark.

I don't think the little details and mixing touches you add in the final mixes get enough love, Nick.

Also, I have to give major props to Murph for a fantastic drum performance that continually evolves.
Thanks. Also, my guitar is ALL OVER this song, especially the first half, and then again at the coda.

The last thing I want to be known as is a repetitive drummer.
Speaking of which, did you realize you played another derivative of "What I Know" at the 5:45 mark and a takeoff on "March of the Hellions" at the 6:04 mark?
Okay, so I never said I wasn't a repetitive guitarist. Besides, neither were intentional, and I think you're the only one noticing this stuff.

At least you're listening.

Just poking, Steve. I don't think you're a repetitive guitarist.

Just play this, Mongorr, In Plain Sight, Hot Corner, and Sold back to back. Very diverse and skillful.

But I listen for enjoyment AND I study the mechanics of the music at the same time. I think it's essential for a musician to do so.

Honestly, some of the best song lyrics I've heard in a long time.

" Hemmoraghing in the backseat with the last poet iconoclast
feed off his imagination, bleed out and make it last."

"We don't understand it, we don't need to."

Just two of my favorite verses.

I have to admit that I'm not a big music person, I don't buy everything that's popular because I like music that makes you think not bubblegum music (chew it up and spit it out).
There are so many layers in this song, I can't describe it all right now but this is the type of music I like, well written song lyrics, tight arrangements and suprising melody and rhthym changes.
I can't say enough about this song.

Great job guys.

I'll just keep bumping these little bitches. Maybe someone who didn't intentionally ignore it might catch it now.

For what it's worth, I plan on doing fresh remixes on all of these over the holidays.

This is pretty fun. I like the whole kitchen sink approach here. The first section, with the goth-y sound, is really cool, and the part with the fast vocals is wild. The latter reminds me of something, but I can't quite place it.
There's enough material in here to make at least 5 different songs out of this. And all 5 would be my favorite songs I've heard from Nightsticks thus far. It's a crowded song and I can imagine that it would be a difficult one to play live.
