Book Club V. 2

Lets do this again. Lets pick an author who we all know and love, no shark books.

I say some Ellroy, or maybe some Jim Thompson.

Whatever, lets just do it again.
The only good Jim Thompson is the GRIFTERS.

Ellroy is always good.

Hammett. RED HARVEST.

Chandler.

Gaiman is another good choice.

Hell, why don't we do Kavalier and Clay?

Just so long as we don't read an Oprah's Book Club selection UNLESS it's "We Were the Mulvaneys". That's an AMAZING book.

Count me in, once again. Although I love Kavalier and Clay, I wonder if it's too well-read around the CHUD stables.

How about we go with something a little less popular? I mean, everyone had read about MEG only because it was being made into a movie, but otherwise, I sure as hell wouldn't have picked it up.

And, not that I can't afford it, but something that's availabe in mass paperback would probably be nice as just about anyone could buy a $6 book. Plus, if they hate the book, it's not like it was a huge investment and they'll feel ok with just pitching it in the dumpster when they're through.

But these are just my humble opinions.

Ya know, just a few topics below this one are lists called "Essential..." You've got scifi, hard-boiled detectives, fantasy and I know a little while back someone did horror novels. I'm sure there are some un-read gems in these lists. Again, just a suggestion.

I've read Kavalier and Clay four times, lets read something less read.

Keep 'em coming.
This'll probably get me pilloried, but I've never read all of Hyperion and would welcome the kick in the ass to do so.

Nor have I, but I am not a huge genre fan.

But I am, as always, willing to try it out.
Would somebody be kind enough to explain what exactly a book club is around these parts?

We all pick a book, and then we read and discuss the book.

AT if we went with one of those, since six is sort of tied into AT.

And I haven't got around to either, so that's my vote too.

American Tabloid is a tough read. Interesting, but stylistically disturbing. We need complete sentences, Ellroy!

That is absolutely untrue.

Okay.

Let's read ROAD TO PERDITION
Oooo...like that idea, Rath.

There was not a single BAD work by Jim Thompson. Sorry, just had to comment. I hope you read some more of his books and stories, Rath. Try The Killer Inside Me, After Dark, My Sweet, Savage Night and so many others. He also wrote Kubrick's film The Killing.

That's a fairly short, out-of-print graphic novel, though. The reprint doesn't come out till July, I believe, and if you're refering to the novelization, I think we could come up with alot of better books to read.[/QB]
Good point(s). Well, the search continues.

It's hard to beat a good Elmore Leonard novel.
I would suggest Pagan Babies, Be Cool and Tishomingo Blues......

Of these I would go with Pagan Babies.
For an older Leonard pick, Stick is a hard book beat.

Tishomingo Blues was a dissapointment.
How bout Hyperion?, because shit, i'm reading that right now.
what's the basic plot of Hyperion?

On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope--and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
I have this book. Tried to read it. Couldn't get into but I would be willing to try it again wink
post #21 of 36
It's just a damn good book..i'm a little more than 60% through it and i'm amazed by it..I haven't had time to finish it, though...
I agree with whomever suggested american tabloid or the cold six thousand. I'm about to buy Summer of Night, Kavalier and Clay and Dreamcatcher so any of these is fine by me too.
How's about Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy? After all, Eli Cash is based on him.

Sam Delany!
Ya know, this is sorta Tony's baby, so let's just let him decide. The thing is, if you don't like the book he selected - don't join in this time. There will be other chances. But, this is just my humble opinion.

No, no, I want it to be a group thing, lets just take a tally and then we decided.

No one is in charge, but thanks for the offer.

So just post the name of a book that has been posted in here, and then whatever has the most votes, we read.

My vote.
American Tabloid
I can groove with American Tabloid
Sounds good to this thief and archer.
I'm still here. I haven't been able to read much of the last book. (MEG)

I've been really busy, since I'm moving to South Carolina. I just got back from finding a place to stay.

I will try to keep up with you guys and discuss when I can.

I nominate Tony Ryan to keep the threads going for the book club.

Everyone cool with that?
I'm cool with Tony being "da man" and I'm cool with American Tabloid.

Here is the set up then, thursday I'll set up a disscussion for the first 100 pages, that doesn't mean you have to be that far then. We'll just have it up then. Every 5 days after that I'll set up another 100 page disscussion.

That cool?
