This film boasts an incredible story and a very impressive soundtrack. Trainspotting includes graphic scenes of drug use, sex and death. One of the finest films to come from Scotland, this movie...
This is one of the best horror novels I have ever read. Had the same effect on me. Beautiful writing, super scary. What got me hooked on Dan Simmons, actually...
You know, it's odd... I read Song of Kali after I read Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night and Children of the Night. And, while a bit disturbing in the end, I didn't get the same impact from Kali that I got from Comfort and Summer.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good read. But I thought Carrion Comfort was a much better read.
As much as I love Carrion Comfort, I think the lean, tight story in Kali has a much more visceral impact. Carrion Comfort is epic in scope, and it's fantastic at doing the job of an epic.
Song of Kali is a mad, fevered dream that rushes over and through you before you realize what's happening.
Plus it's got that wonderful, haunting prologue. "The Dreams are not unpleasant." You rock, Dan.

Just one man's opinion.
comfort does, indeed, rule.
the best thing about simmons' horror noveles: you never know who's going to die. he's great at killing off characters you are suer are going to survive and be the bokk's hero
I've been on these boards since way back to hell and gone, and the one statement that I have repeated NEARLY most often concerning all things literature (and ESPECIALLY all things Simmons) is: Song of Kali will FUCK you up. And not in a good way.
I and family are currently homeless, fighting State Farm and suing my former apartment complex. It just so happens that in my current incarnation of not having a place to live, I have a superfast satellite connection. Heh.
How are the bugs down in Florida, evil? I got nothing to do after CHUDWest until all bitches gimme my pay, I may just visit...
Yeah. Yeah, you would visit NOW THAT I'M NOT THERE.
...Dammit...
Well, I'm back in AL, having gotten my Associate's in Film, but I'm semi-homeless as well. Sorta moved in with Dad, working for him, saving what I can, owing around $45,000...
Hmm. I read this one when it first came out and was rather disappointed, especially considering all the hype that surrounded it. Plus, something about the worldview Simmons promulgates in this book, something about the capital-E EEEVILL intrinsic to Calcutta, rubbed me the wrong way and seemed a little wilfully naive. Anyway I probably need to read it again (though I don't feel particularly inclined to right now) before commenting on it further.
Nick, that reminds me ... DAMMIT! ... prior to those nasty events of my life, we were talking about me sending you the Chtorr novels on loan. Still interested?
