Why do people read MAXIM et al. ...

... when Playboy is so the better fucking Magazine. And less adds, too. I mean, beaver shots and Kurt Vonnegut vs. bad airbrushing and Ted Nugent? give me a fucking break.

Are you with me?

Maybe it is because of the celebrities. So...damn...hot.

Of course, I have neither mags so I don't know.

Maxim has funnier writers.

I don't always look at Maxim for skin, really.

I subscribe to both and I read both quite religiously. The good thing about Maxim, is I feel that it speaks to me more directly as a poor, single bum like most guys out there. Not a STUPID bum, mind you, but, for example, I could care less when Playboy tells me about there being a new $3000, double-breasted suit available from Armani when I can barely afford a $300 suit from Men's Wearhouse. Maxim caters more to the average Joe by giving us information we can actually use in our poor, 9-5 lives.

Playboy might be better written, but for the most part I just don't feel like I'm the person they're really targeting.

I read and enjoy both magazines, but I've always thought of Maxim as "Playboy, but dumber and without the nudity".

It's a lot easier for a teenage boy to get his hands on an issue of Maxim than it is a Playboy. The last time I looked through a Playboy was about a year ago and from the writing of its articles and the way the Playmates are done up Hugh Hefner must still think it's 1984. The obscene amount of ads and the lack of full on nudity are my two biggest gripes with Maxim. I can understand about the nudity, they started doing that they'd loose their hot celebrity chick pictorials, but there's no excuse for that many advertisements in a single issue of a magazine.

Maxim is for wusses who are too afraid to buy real porno.

I usually go for "Drunk Naked Sluts", or "Oh my god ! She has balls!".

Maxim is a shite mag. It's got to have the worst reporters and articles I have ever read.

The only good thing about it is Jennifer Love Hewitts tits.

I hate Maxim, and all the other new men's magazines. I liked Details when it first came out in the early 90s, but it got lame very quickly. I dunno, I'm a very atypical male, so maybe I'm just not the target audience.

Playboy, on the other hand, is a quite good mag. The Playboy Interview is usually about the most in-depth interview you can find. And the girls tend to be a little meatier, not like they were in the 70s, but compared to the Maxim standard.

I've bought Maxim maybe ten times.

I've bought Playboy only once, twice if Special Editions count.

I like the articles in Maxim. Shit like "50 Manly Things Every Guy Should Know" and the ilk.

And the hot starlets don't hurt either.

Playboy...I'll only buy it when it's a MAJOR chick or if it has an interview or article on someone I admire.

Last one I picked up was the one with the Tim Burton interview...

All my friends, especially my female friends, scoff at me when I tell them I buy Playboy for the articles, but it's the God's honest truth. The short fiction, 20 questions, and the interviews are the main draw for me, not the pictorials. If I want to see pics of naked women I'll go buy a High Society or a Penthouse.

Don't get me wrong, pictures of naked women are A-OK by me. But it's like a scoop of ice cream on your cake. A welcome addition, to be sure, but not essential for the enjoyment.

My better half always gets wound up when I bring home a Playboy, no matter how much I explain to her that it's for a specific article, and that with a computer, I can see waaaaaay better porn.

I think Playboy has some great writers, and Maxim is at times amusing, but I'm an Esquire man myself - a little more old school than Maxim but still has some swell chicks, great writing, etc.

I'll buy the hot movie stars argument, but the accessible fashion one is weak. I just flipped throught the MAXIMs on my john, and the clothes were all expensive, not mention vapid.

As for funny writing, yeah, MAXIM and friends are funny —*until you realized the jokes are recycled, often from British editions of other DENNIS publications. And Playboy still has Better writing.

One thing to note about those fashion spreads: it's not so much having the $2,000 Armani suit that's important, it's looking at the clothes and reading the articles and getting a sense of style; less expensive clothes accessorized properly look as good or better than expensive clothes worn badly. The difference is style.

Sure, it'd be nice to plop the Visa Platinum down on Savile Row and run up a bill that'd be no problem to pay off; but a keen eye for what's good and tasteful is invaluable.

So ignore the price tags and look at the cut and style of the suit.

I had a sub to Maxim for two years (99-00?) but literally had to cancel it because they started publishing totally re-treaded versions of previous articles. I suppose it happens with any mag, but I just kept getting deja-vu from it and I started to think I was crazy.

Personally, I prefer Black Tail.
