Red Rabbit, and it's a "young Jack Ryan" novel -- here's the blurb from a flyer that came with my Science Fiction Book Club mailing today:
Quote:
Long before he was president, Ryan was an ex-Marine, a teacher, and an historian researching a book in England. After a series of deadly encounters, Ryan is brought to the attention of the CIA. Suddenly he's hired as an analyst and his first assignment is to stop a Soviet plot to assassinate Pope John Paul II. As Ryan tries to unravel the plot, a deadly game of cat and mouse between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. puts the stability of the Western world in peril.
So, basically, a first draft for the next Affleck movie, if you ask me.

I'm looking forward to the new one. I have all of his stuff, but it is really hard to get Jack Ryan in the middle of everything when he is sitting in the oval office. Most of his main characters (Clark, Chavez, Murray, Robbie Jackson) have progressed to a point where it takes something monumental to get them together. This prequel idea is good, but we'll have to see how the execution is. I would prefer to see some more things with the Rainbow crew, but what you gonna do.

Didn't Ryan just join the CIA in The Sum of all Fears? How many "first assignments" can he have?

And it's a bad idea going back to using the Soviets and bad guys. He used to be on the cutting edge predicting doomsday senarios. Now, he's just looking for that next movie/video game deal.

He was a full fledged CIA member in SOAF, but in Red OCtober and Patriot Games he was only a consultant.

In order of the stories:
Patriot Games: Jack wasn't with the CIA. He was a history teacher in the beginning, but ended up becoming an analyst after what happened in London. He moved over full time at the end of the book.
Red October: Jack was the right hand man to Admiral James Greer [Deputy Director - Intelligence (DDI)] and a full time member of the CIA
Cardinal of the Kremlin: Same as in Red October
Clear and Present Danger: Jack becomes acting DDI
Sum of All Fears: Jack is Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (DDCI), second in command at the CIA.

Yes, I know too much about this character wink

From the description way up top, it looks like Red Rabbit is set in between Patriot Games and Red October. Therefore, it seems to fit, because the events in Patriot Games didn't have to do with a CIA assignment, and Red October was never billed as his first one.
I think you might be getting the movie Sum of All Fears confused with the book. There was some significant rewriting done because of how young Affleck is, but in the books, SOAF was well down the road in Jack's career.
