Film and Page to Stage

There's been a trend in Theatre to adapt films into musicals (Saturday Night Fever, Footloose, The Producers, Hairspray, etc) and there are plenty more to come (Dirty Dancing, The Vampire Lestat among others). However, there are many films out there that would make interesting straight dramatic adaptations. A lot of these are already based on books. Here are some of my ideas, what are some of yours? (P.S. If you think this is a stupid idea, proceed to mock endlessly)

Fight Club -I'd do this as a five person show, with actors playing Jack, Tyler, Marla, and the other two playing all the other roles. The play would be done on a bare, minimalist stage and the atmosphere created with lighting and sound. It would draw on both the book and the movie, most notably by going to the book's original, more chiling ending.

L.A. Confidential -Returning to Ellroy's dense epic, this would be staged a la Cider House Rules (the Tom Hulce directed version that starred Colm Meany as Larch) and Angels in America, in that it would be a two-night performance. Like Cider House, the play would employ Ellroy's language to describe the action.

I've always thought The Island of Dr. Moreau would be as big as Phantom of the Opera if it was adapted into a musical. It would fare better than Jekyll and Hyde, because there'd be a lot more of a cast, and a lot more opportunity to play with the themes of duality and morality.

As a straight play, though? Can't think of any except Wolf. This bombed as a film, but I think the slow build would lend itself well to the theater-going crowd.

Conversely, I wish someone with money would get off their ass and film the stage play The Foreigner.

Note: The Foreigner is the funniest damn play I've ever seen. Keep in mind, though, I haven't seen The Iceman Cometh.
