Magazines!

What magazines (Besides the Dead Squirrel) does everyone read?

-Magnet: I adore this magazine. It's got everything I could possibly want to know about the indie and alternative music scene and it sells for a mere $4.50.

-Empire: British magazines kick arse, period.

-Hotdog: Like Empire, only funnier.

-Entertainment Weekly: It can be trashy, but it covers pretty much everything, although it does lack depth.

When I can afford it I also like Mojo (The best British retro music magazine out there, but it is $12), Q (Another great British music mag, but it's also $12), Mother Jones (Can you say left-wing? Okay, it is, but it does cover a lot of things many magazines won't) and I miss Spy magazine with all my heart. Also Premiere and Movieline are usually pretty decent reads, but I find they're a little skimpy on the content.

Subscribe to:

New Scientist - Round-up of all things scientific.

National Geographic - The best magazine ever.

Canadian Geographic - Like National, only Canadian, and with more adverts.

Read:

Time
Mojo
Q
Rolling Stone
Macleans
Loaded
Esquire
Evo
Top Gear
Adbusters
Rock and Ice
Backpacker

I don't read entertainment rags—they're just too fruity, and the 'net is so much better.

Subscribe to:
Playboy
Maxim
Smithsonian
National Geographic
Skeptical Inquierer
American Heritage (though dropping this one like a bad habit)
Writer's Digest

Roommate gets EW so I read that, too. And every once in a while I'll pick up Wizard when I'm at the comic shop.

Sub:

The Sporting News: IMO THE finest sportsweekly as far as in-depth coverage goes; if you want pretty pictures and 3 articles, get SI

Esquire: the little lady won't let me subscribe to Playboy (which I would, honestly, read for the articles), so I get Esquire; a bit more highbrow than Maxim, Stuff, et al

EW: just subscribed to this

Pick up:
usually just AP or Spin every now and again; The Onion is distributed for free here, which is awesome, and a local pinko/hippie/homo paper called the Shepherd Express

EW -- it can leave me bored for a couple of weeks straight, then a good issue pops up and I remember why I've been a subscriber for almost a decade now

Rue Morgue -- best horror mag going

Cemetery Dance -- at one time the best horror fiction magazine on the newsstands, but lately it's quality has really been dropping off

Heavy Metal -- you got to love this one

Outre -- a goofy and fun thing that covers so many different and unique topics

JUGGS -- hey, a little porno is good for the soul now and then

Hustler's Busty Beauties -- okay, a lot of porn is good for the soul

Toyfare -- a funny magazine with great pictures of action figures

Kitbuilders, Modeler's Resource, Amazing Figure Modeler -- I love resin kits and reading all the reviews and building tips of the latest ones

Psychotronic -- when I can find it at a store I'll pick it up

Where to start....

GamePro- Not the best game mag, but one of my favorites and one of the only PC AND Console mags. Been subscribing since like, '96.

Entertainment Weekly- My favorite mag, been subscribing since like '97. I don't always agree with them but they're pretty good writers.

Maxim- 'Nuff said.

FHM- Not as good as Maxim or Stuff, but we like it.

Stuff- Not as good as Maxim, but still awesome nonetheless. And you can never go wrong with Randy the helpful Pineapple.

Movieline- Some good movie news sometimes.

Sports Illustrated- My second favorite magazine.

That's it as far as subscribing....

Testify.

I subscribe to:

Vanity Fair
Fantasy & Science Fiction
Total Movie (a decision I currently regard as a mistake)

A pal o' mine got me a subscription to the New Yorker for Christmas and now I read it like mad every week. Strangely, I get a free subscription to Creative Screenwriting.

I buy at the newstand religiously:

Fangoria
Hot Dog

I buy at the newstand with regularity:

Cinefex
Premiere (and French Premiere which rocks)
Entertainment Weekly
Starlog
Total Film
Talk (well, not anymore. Really was the poor man's Vanity Fair at times)
Empire
Starburst
Shivers
SFX
Analog
Asmiov's
Scarlet Street
Locus

It's an addiction.

I buy Empire, the Official Star Wars mag and these nifty SW fact file things. I'll sometimes glance at SFX, but I usually can't stand the writing in it.

How could I forget Cinefex? That and Popular Science are the only 2 that I suscribe to.

I used to buy Fango religiously, but it just got too rich for my blood.

I get The Atlantic Monthly. My three-year subscription to Cycle World just expired.

I grew up with lots of MAD, National Geographic, EW, Hit Parader, U.S. News, Glamour, and Vogue.
Now I buy Bizarre, which is the most perpetually interesting magazine; Vanity Fair always has good articles; Total Film has the best film info and most laughs that I've seen; also Details, GQ, Vogue, and anything glossy enough to draw my distracted gaze. Flaunt always looks nice. And I subscribe to The Pastel Journal, too.
Cosmo is evil but sometimes I can't resist the temptation.
I love magazines.

I've picked up that "Bizarre" magazine a couple of times...and the title fails to do it justice. There's some wacky-ass stuff in that magazine. I get to the point where I'm afraid to turn to the next page because I don't know if the picture will be a man getting his hand cut off in the Middle East, or a picture of a woman who has never shaved...ANYTHING. eek!
Yeah, some of it I could honestly do without.
But they always have such strange and fascinating articles and I always end up learning things. There was an issue last year with an article about geriatric felons, including some septuagenarian bank robbers and an 80-year old man who was arrested on drug charges because he had decided that he wanted to try crack before he died. It also had an article about evil laughter. I can't resist that crazy stuff!

Re: HOTDOG MAGAZINE

Empire magazine has of late lost much of the humour it once had - I've been collecting it for about five years now. Its look and everything about it have gotten a tad stale and boring. In particular what pissed me off is the increasing amount of filler - whole pages wasted on one paragraph of interview promoting some shite new Britflick. This led me to try something new - Hotdog.

I urge fellow Empire-devouring Chewers to check it out. It's not fifty per cent advertisements like Empire is, and it doesn't come from the stable (Empire and Total Film often have the exact same interview snippets). It's quite full of meaty reading material. And terrific humour CHUD can appreciate.

In the issue I picked up there is less devotion to reviews (the only opinion to really trust is your own anyway) than to fascinating, revealing articles. Here we get MASSIVE coverage of Panic Room, from there David Fincher interviews, and from there the Alien saga. A great article on The Wicker Man (sounds interesting, I haven't seen it). They even take time to appreciate VINCENT SCHIAVELLI.

I know I sound all promotional, but I just think it's a kickass read that you might be missing out on, even if it doesn't have the clout of Empire.
