My Photographs

Although I haven't picked up my camera for several years now, I thought I'd share some of my photos and get some feedback on them. All of the pictures are from my rather crap web site

Yes it is! I absolutely love that photo, actually. Works on many different visual levels. Very cool.

This photo should be in an art gallery.

And I am very serious about that.

Wow! Thanks. It's actually just an overflow pipe for a reservoir near my parents house, but taken out of context and with a bit of flash, it does look really odd. It's also the one that everybody says is their favourite.

These are great shots. People and cities are really difficult subjects. I like the soft light, what sort of film were you using?

Christ, it was about three years ago now. I think it was called T-MAX or something like that. It's a black and white film that can be processed as colour - giving the sepia effect. It helped that it was early morning in Prague, and a fantastic Disney snowstorm had just started. I think it's impossible to take a bad photo of Prague, to be honest. It's a gorgeous city.

It's an Eastern European thing. They're photogenic. You can take a pullitzer with a disposable point-and-shoot. But those pictures still look great—I always marvel at how the polluted haze softens the morning light. I had a similar experience in Moscow, which makes even the most mundane shot look exotic. Of course, I still managed to take boring pictures.

That film really suits Prague, by-the-way.

Ok, do you have a really nice, big scan of that pipe photo? Cuz that would make a rockin' desktop wallpaper.

They're all fantastic, but this one is by far my favorite:

Touch of vertigo, anyone?

Absoultely beautiful, I've heard many lovely things about Prague from a friend who's travelled there twice, but she never had any pics.

I worked for a photography company for over 2 years, hung out with pros ALL the time, and I still can't take a decent photo, bums me out, I really love the medium.

My top 3:

LOVE angles (specially those that're pointed up). I like to take pics at skewed angles all the time, this one rocks

Who'da thunk Girlcreeture would like a pic of a graveyard...? wink

Excellent captured moment, love!

I'll see if I can find the original and scan it big enough for desktop use. Shall we say $5 a time? Nah, just kidding.

Creetch, you'd love Prague. There's a big long grey shopping precinct, and then you slip through a side street at the end and it's like you've travelled back 400 years. It's very gothic, but not in a depressing way. The snowstorm was just the perfect touch. It made everything unreal. Loads of big castles, monuments, statues - I don't think there's a single building that isn't decorated in some ornate way. It's really cheap as well, with good beer wink

The graveyard, by the way, is the Jewish cemetery. It's behind the memorial to the Czech victims of the holocaust - an entire building with the names of the dead engraved on the walls. Incredibly sad, but very beautiful.

I'll post some of my other pics later.

WHITBY

For the benefit of non-UK Chewers, Whitby is a town on the North East coast of England, in Yorkshire. It's famous as the town where Dracula arrived after crossing the sea from Europe, and there's even a grave in the grounds of Whitby Abbey with a skull and crossbones on it. According to legend, it's Dracula's last resting place.

That last one really screws with my perspective. Maybe it's because I have no clue just what in the bloody hell it's a picture of, so I can't judge how big it should be It looks like it's a big statue or something, but with those houses looking so small in the background, it almost looks like a model (Camelot!...Camelot!...Camelot!). Either way, some great shots once again, Dan.

Dan, I agree with what everyone else is saying. These are beautiful and evocative shots. You obviously have a great eye. Thanks for posting them!
