Stone work.

I'm going to start doing another stone sculpture soon.

Right now I'm using soapstone which doesn't really require power tools. But eventually want to work on marble, limbstone, etc.

Here's my predicament:

I live in a townhome and have neighbors close by, but I do have somewhat of a backyard and screened in porch area I could work in.

The problem arises when I want to use power tools on my work, hammer, chissels, etc. Mucho noise! What do you recommend? I was thinking about asking permission to work at a local college, but haven't ever asked. What should I do?

Just work in normal hours and not at night. Most neighborhood communities and townhouses have certain hours when it's okay to make a lot of noise that's not offensive. I mean you really shouldn't blast Marilyn Manson while you work and curse like a sailor, but general work noise {chipping stone, power tools and the like} shouldn't break any rules and shouldn't receive any complaints. You might get a face poked over the fence wondering what the hell you're doing, but once they see the work, they shouldn't mind...

Unless they're trying to sleep...in which case you should talk to your neighbors anyway.

Just my thoughts, dude.

Thanks for the advice.

I probably won't use air tools, just a hammer and chissel the most. Shouldn't be too loud unless I 'curse like a sailor'. wink

I'll post pics when I'm done. But that will be a while.

Do you have other works in stone? I'm really interested in doing that type of work, but don't have a clue how to get started on it. Also, I love the medium. It looks just so raw.

Billy, If you are going to work with marble, oh my...you will wake up the neighbors for sure. grin
Why don't you call Furman or North Greenville College, and check on it. I am sure the arts department at either school might work something out with you.

By the way, if you want to show any of your work or sell it, I know a great place you can contact. They show some great local work in downtown Greenville.

Here is another idea, check with the "Artist Pallet" in downtown, and ask them if they know where you could work on your rock sculptures without disturbing anyone.

I would love to see some of your work. I love rock sculptures. I did one in a friends yard for his Japanese Garden. I love to do it, but it is time consuming.

Got any pictures of your work?

Take care Billy.

I would recommend taking a class, but you can learn it on your own. Start off with some softer stones (limestone, soapstone, etc.)

I don't have any pics, plus I'm pretty new to stone work. I'm probably going to do some smaller pieces in soap stone, etc and then tackle some of the harder rocks.

At first I hated stone work, but when I started working with the stone and not against it. I found I really loved it, and wanted to do more. I have one piece of soap stone I bought before graduating from college and have a perfect design for it. I will order some more when I finish that piece.

I've used a Dremal with a grinding disc, they're fairly quite. You might give that a shot. And this might allow you to work inside as well.

I thought about that, but Soap Stone is kina messy.

I will post pics when I'm done, and I will take some pictures of the stone I gave to my mom.
