Things to Do in L.A. When You're Baked...

So, I'm planning on flying out to L.A. on the 20th
and staying a week or so. The highlight will definitely be the CHUDWEST BBQ, but for a fella who's never been to L.A. before, what do you locals suggest I should put on my itinerary? My interests include movies, comics, games, museums, baseball...I might check out the Dodgers (I'm not sure if they're in town then, actually) since I've heard Dodger Stadium ranked as one of the most beautiful in North America, maybe next to KC, but I've only seen it on KTLA.

Any suggestions?

You simply MUST see the Getty for one of the best museums in the world -- not only works of fine and precious art, but of amazing architecture with a beautiful view of the city.

Go to the Golden Apple comic shop on Melrose and then proceed to just wander up and down Melrose freak-gazing.

The Beaches at Santa Monica and Venice are worth the price of admission, which is nothing. But I'd go there to just see pure California beach freaks.(they are almost all from somewhere else.) I suppose Hollywood is a must for first timers, despite the fact I spend a lot of time trying to warn people not to waste their time going there, they always do, so what the hell.

Jack's "Melrose Stroll" is a good idea. That you will enjoy.

The only thing wrong with Dodger Stadium is the fact that it is the Dodgers who play there. Siiiiigh! Fuckers!

If your up for a lil immense beauty and incredible gradens I suggest the Hunington Library and gardens. It's in San Marino and it is the most incredible looking place I've been to.

Heh freak gazing is always fun. You can got to Westwood and enjoy the niceites there.

I concur with the Getty. If you want an incredible movie experience go to the Arclight while in Hollywood. Incredible place and you can see some stars occasionally. Saw Vince Vaughn there last time I went. (G/F started chatting it up with him )

Theres more but other people will have to tell you. Hey why doesn't HBAADY mention his favorite spots. I know he likes the Barfly or something.

Oh and Beverly Hills is always nice. Santa Monica specifically would be the pier and Third Street Promenade.

Also, somone help me out here, but where the grove is is a really nice theatre and very nice farmers market and other stores. I give that a thumbs up. I think it was on Fairfax. Saw Hank Azaria there with his *ahem* "beard."

If your looking for a fun beach experience, go further south than LA . Huntington Beach is a good beach for tourists, Laguna right now is awesome with the Sawdust Festival and Pageant of the Masters . . .

Skylight Books on Vermont in Los Feliz

Vroman's on Colorado in Pasadena

USED:

Illiad Books in North Hollywood (THE BEST)

Brand Books and something else across the street on Brand in Glendale

Books on Wilshire in Santa Monica

There's a whole bunch in Burbank on or near San Fernando just south of the Media Center Mall

and many, many more...

SPECIALTY STORES:

Dangerous Visions on Ventura in Sherman Oax (scifi)

Dark Delicacies on Burbank in Burbank (Horror/Dark fantasy)

There's a mystery store somewhere, too.

Oh, and Wack-O in Los Feliz has alot of cool counterculture, art and kitschy books.

I don't think Midnight Special is still there. The Promenade is a must see, though ... and they've got a Borders and a Barnes & Noble.

Beware of the Homeless (man) sitting on one of the benches outside Borders at the Promenade. He's prone to dropping his pants down to his ankles. Seriously. I've seen the same exact guy on the same bench for the past 2+ years!!

As for must-dos. Here are just a couple of mine:

Jerry's Deli in Studio City. Good food. Good atmosphere. Last time I was there I saw Sarah Michelle Gellar (she's quite overrated once you see her in person) and Freddie Prinze Jr munching down at one table and Kelsy Grammer over at another one.

Cafe 50's in Santa Monica (on Santa Monica Blvd). Simply the best milkshakes anywhere on Earth. No exaggeration.

If you go to Venice Beach (which is kinda a must), then stop for a burger and a beer at The Sidewalk Cafe. That's another one of my usual L.A. rituals.

I have tons more, but your plate is already full.

Carl, there was a recent fire at Jerry's Deli in Studio City. Jerry's is now closed because of the fire and the renovations. It is going to reopen. There is another one in Encino and in L.A. also.

I love Jerry's and have seen Bill Murray, his brother and Harold Ramis all there eating Matzo ball soup and huge pastrami sandwiches. People walking by every few seconds saying, "Who you gonna call." They took it well.

Its a very cool place, when it isn't on fire.

I LIVE on In and Out. Good place for Shakes, malts and hamburgers used to be Flaming Patti's on Vine down near Melrose. It's been years since I was there, but man, they used to be about the best anywhere.

IN addition to getting the burgers Animal Style, which is essential, you can also get a neopolitan shake.

Hey, doesn't the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank have carhop service on Saturdays, like in American Graffiti? That would be a very cool thing to do.

Another good idea would be to eat some Oaxachan cuisine. From this region in Mexico, they make these sauces called "moles" that are incredibly dense, some of them have like 50 ingredients in them (including chocolate, cinnamon, toasted pumpkin seeds, various tree barks). This is the kind of thing that you just cannot get in the rest of the country. In fact, having lived in LA, I don't even see the point in eating any Mexican food in the rest of the country. Anyway, some places with good mole:

Santa Monica Blvd, next door to Carl's beloved Cafe 50s

But the place that's supposed to have the best, which I haven't tried yet, is Guelaguetza

Ok you guys, i had the pleasure of visiting ur excellant State last year.
Me and some mates hired Harleys and spent 3 amazing weeks touring the West coast from SF down to SD stopping at LA then a quick jolly over to Veags (well u have to dont u?.*L*) then back to LA, and well, the best time of my life.
Went to all the touristy places but also just hung around and got to know some of u local boys and girls and just had a wild time.

So basically thank you.
