Upstate: How about a trip to the dollar theater?

In Clemson there is a famous old theater called the Astro Triple. Tickets are $1.50 at all times. They play fairly recent movies (for instance, right now they are showing James Bond, Harry Potter 2, and Traesure Planet). The place is kept up pretty well. The crowds there are (obviously) mostly college kids. You can search it at www.carmike.com .

I propose we hit it up a couple weekends from now, either on Fri January 10 or Sat Jan 11. Kinda let the holidays die down a bit, ya know. We could catch a flick (we'll have to wait and see what will be playing there then) then hit a local eatery.

Anyone wanna go just post here.

BTW, Merry Christmas

Sounds great. It'll take me that long to get through all of the DVDs that I got for Christmas.

Just let me know closer to the time and I'll be sure to keep my calendar free.

Ah...the dollar theaters...how I miss them. The one in G'ville (which was a DUMP) is now a church. Nice to know that they've still got 'em around.

Yeah, the Astro is kept up a little better than the typical dollar joint.

There used to be a kickass dollar joint in Anderson called the Village. It was a dump, but in a good way.

Anyway, here's hoping something decent will be playing that weekend.

Alright, who else wants to join in?
Why do you keep saying Upstate?

Upstate what?
I think they're from Canada.
Upstate = Upstate South Carolina.

I'm in Joe. Been looking for a dollar theater around these parts.
Seems like there would be a lot of "upstates" on the east coast.

Why do some people just like to cause trouble?

We've been referring to Upstate SC as "Upstate" for months. Check for yourself.

Oh, and Brian, good to hear your in for the Astro.

Who else is in?
How is that causing trouble?

Because if you draw to much attention to "CHUD South Carolina," people will realize there are only 3 members...

Yes, I do have one of those. Thanks for reminding me about my daily check-up!

Not really. Normally, it would be 4 members, though Travis has been missing lately. Plus, I am an unofficial transplant that tags along every now and again (or would like to.) So, I guess that makes 5.

I will check my schedule and if we aimed for Friday night, it could turn into a weekend of goodness with some XBOX fun at Brian's as well.

Chris, bring Steve-John, cause I need to meet him after your stories of adventure!

I was just kidding, fellas, relax.

CHUD Philly only has one member...
Is this still a go? 'Coz if so, I was wondering where we'd be meeting up (not to mention when). I don't know my way 'round Clemson too well, but I'm sure I could follow directions (here's hoping).

It's still on like chicken bones. Either Jan 10 or 11.

We'll get the details firmed up in the next week or so. You know, un important stuff like: Where to meet, what time, what flick, etc

BTW, the Astro is currently showing the same three movies as in the original post, but our get together is 2 weekends from now so it will be different by then. Such is the nature of "second-run" theaters. We'll have to wait and see.
Let's do this Saturday.
Everyone knows that upstate means New York State, you know, Syracuse, Albany ... sheesh ...
Allright. We got the point from Devin and Flyers. No need to tie up our thread like this.

Yeah, Saturday is probably the best day. Let's shoot for that. I'm gonna call the theater tonite and see if they can tell me what's going to be on there this weekend.
Great to hear Infinite. I'll give you a call as the days wind down to the weekend.

Is this an ex or a new girlfriend?

Ok here's the rub

I called the theater. This weekend they are going to have:

Potter 2
Santa Clause 2
Star Trek Nemesis

Most of us have seen Potter 2, and the other two choices don't exactly set the world on fire. I guess Star Trek would probably be the better choice. Or...

We could forego the dollar theater for the time being, and meet in Greenville on Saturday and see either "Adaptation" or "NARC", which both go wide this weekend. Then we can do dinner after. Thoughts?

BTW, Infinite good to hear from you man. Beginning to think you were gonna let your movie geek card expire. Hope to see you this Saturday man.

I'm not a big Cage fan. I really REALLY want to see NARC. But this is a democratic thread, so whatever the majority wants to see.

And I do not want to see Star Trek, so the dollar place is out.

I say we meet in Greenville on Saturday and see whatever the majority pick is. It will be better because I have to drive up to GV after work on Friday and there is a better chance that Travis will be able to join us. I had plans to see both NARC and ADAPTATION, but will see either. We could always do a double-header and then dinner or movie-dinner-movie. The only reason I mention this is because I will be tied up the next couple of weekends with family events and there is a strong chance I won't make it into Atlanta to see all the films I would like to see, since none of them will open in my immediate area.

Despite our fear of a bad Nicolas Cage movie (which is quite often), I have faith in ADAPTATION being excellent considering the filmmakers behind it and the supporting cast. I LOVED the trailer and it looks like Cage is finally emerging from Bruckheimer Hell and I am interested in seeing his return to goodness. BEING JOHN MALKOVICH was excellent and weird and you know we all love excellent and weird films.

Plus, 25TH HOUR and ABOUT SCHMIDT are playing at Greenville Hollywood 20 as of this Friday as well. I have seen SCHMIDT though, so would be partial to the others first.

Here are the showtimes for the theaters in the Greenville area on Saturday.

Ok, how about:

Saturday Jan 11, 'NARC' at 7:20 at the Hollywood and then dinner.

Restaurant preferences?
Sounds fine guys, count me in. I've got Brian's cell number, so if by some act of God, I'm not able to go, I'll give him a call.

So does this mean we've decided on Narc over Adaptation? Guess that means that Adaptation will be in my Friday night plans...

Restaurant preferences? What are you guys up for? There's always Flat Rock, which is right in front of the theater. Also near by is TGI Fridays...whatever you guys decide is fine with me (as long as it ain't sushi).

As I stated above, I am willing to see more than one film this weekend. Justin, if you do decide to go to ADAPTATION, how about we go to the Saturday afternoon showing at 4:00? If this is not cool, I'd be up for the 9:50 show on Friday night. Brian, Chris, Travis...you guys have any interest?

Flat Rock or TGI would be fine w/ me

I will not be able to come up to G-Ville on Friday night, Drew. I do look forward to seeing you all on Saturday evening as planned.

And as far as the flick, like I said, I'm keen on 'Adaptation' as well as 'NARC'. I'm like Brian, though, in that I have REALLY been looking forward to NARC. Either would be fine, though. Just let me know by tommorrow so we can cement meeting time/place, etc.
Flat Rock or TGI...doesn't matter to me, though wasn't FRG a little pricier. Guess we can just make up our minds after the movie and depending on the crowds...or should we make reservations (and does either place even take reservations?)

I am talking with Brian this evening.

Right now the tally is:

Justin, Travis & Andrew want to see ADAPTATION, but we could see NARC just as easily.

Brian & Chris want to see NARC bad and are unsure if they can stand two hours of Nicolas Cage on the big screen.

Actually I like Cage. Hell, I own Gone in 60 Seconds on DVD (*ducks flying tomatoes*).

Either is fine (but my vote is for NARC wink ), as long as it's an evening show, as I have to work Saturday AM and then make the commute to Greenville.

Unfortunately, I've gotta work Saturday morning, so I couldn't make it to that 4 o'clock show (I won't be leaving work 'till 4:30-ish). As for the 9:50 show Friday...not too sure about my Friday night plans so I don't wanna really commit to it (espeically since you'd be driving from Atlanta, right? I'd hate to have to cancel on THAT). I'll end up seeing it either way.

NARC' at 7:20 at the Hollywood and then dinner

Anything else if fair game. Yes, even chasing chickens.

Cool.

Meet in front of Oshman's inside the mall at 6:50?

30 minutes before the show is required at the Hollywood on a Saturday night methinks.

Oh, and what's the official head count on this bad boy? I count Brian, Justin, Travis (tentative), Drew, and myself. Any other lurkers?

LOL. No, "Steve-John" is going shopping with some of her girlfriends in Anderson today. I know some of you were looking for ward to meeting "him"

Cast it yourself, shitty!
Had a great time at the movie and dinner last night, ya shittys!

Let's do it again soon!

Good times. I say next gathering, we go to Covington and trash Andrew's pad. How's about it?

Trash it yourself, shitty.

(Sorry, just had to do it)

Like I say, let's shoot for an ATL invasion February 15.

Ha! Ha! It's already trashed, ya shittys! We could watch a movie here and sleep in the den, but you would have to deal with the '27 inch telly and AUX connected from the stereo to similuate 2-channel sound.

Damn! I need to move out on my own, as I'd have to also get rid of my mom for the evening! Maybe I can coerce her friends into a movie outing that weekend or she may even visit her boyfriend in your state, considering it's Valentine's weekend.

So the 15th of February is it? Shit, don't think I'll be able to make that. Stomp is comin' to the Peace Center that night and I plan on getting tickets this weekend... You guys can go without the Justinator or we can reschedule it for another weekend. Whutever.

Actually...I'm thinking about heading to Atlanta to see The Lion King on IMAX on the 25th of THIS month (considering it's still playing by then...). Could be a fun outing if you guys wanted to do it then. Of course, animated Disney stuff might not be y'all's cup o' tea.

And on a side note, how come I can make a link to my dvd collection on here, but when I put it in my signature, things get all screwed up? As I've already asked Andrew...what's the secret, shitty?!

Fuckin'-a. It actually works now. Nevermind then.

And after all this trouble...everyone had BETTER click that link in my signature.

Lion King!?!? eek!

Not my cup of tea.
Thread Starter
I'll pass on the Lion King, but I appreciate the invite, J.

The only reason Feb 15 is getting tossed around is because I am off work that Sat, which is as rare as cohesive dialogue in a Rob Cohen flick. You guys feel free to schedule a seperate or additioanl trip to ATL. Peace.
Hey, if you guys wanna do something on the 15th, go right ahead. Don't reschedule things on my account.

Besides, as of right now I don't even have those Stomp tickets so I may not be going after all. You know how these things go...
