long term parking in NYC?

I'm moving to Manhattan (from LA) in less than a week. Do any of you NY Chewers have any advice on long term parking in the city? We're looking to park our car in a garage if possible. Do garages' rates fluctuate depending on how often you take the car out per month? What kind of rates are we looking at?
Any help would be appreciated.

I lived in the upper east side for some time, and I payed $650 p/month for a garage. and I got a *nice* rate.

Garages and long-term parkings do get a bit expensive in NYC considering I payed $40 a month Brentwood/LA.
