Question for you English wankers...

Thread Starter
I'm currently reading a book by an Englishman (Mil Millington, Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About, VERY funny), and he occasionally uses the word "whinge".

What the hell does that mean? Is it like the American "whine"? And how does one pronounce it?

Thanks for clearing this up for a stupid Yank.
whinge = whine.

and it's pronounced... well, it rhymes with 'hinge'.
Yeah, our honorary brit-chick got it. It means to complain and whine. We're very good at it.
It has to be close to our national pastime.
synonymous with moaning. if you told someone to stop moaning over here, any listeners in would think you were complaining about their bed manners.

edited because i have just decided i hate smilies.

Thanks all. One round of tea and scones, on me.

Here's another question: What exactly is a "wanker"?
As a yank, I understand the phrase to mean "masturbator."

And you sir are correct.
What does it mean in the U.S then?

"Wanker" or "Masturbator"?

A masturbator is a person who jerks himself off like 99% of the Chewers here do (me included!).
It does indeed mean masturbator.. as in "I'm off for a wank" but these days it's used just as much of an insult, mostly with the younger generation. "you wanker" is sort of like "your an asshole". Or "that song is wank" i.e shit.

Going around calling someone or something a masturbator just doesn't have the same ring to it, so wank/wanker is becoming multi purpose.

We may not be able to cook or fuck very well, but as a nation we excel at inventing great new ways to swear. All our swears have at least 100 grammatical uses.
I hate to sound a cliche, but what exactly is the appeal of blood pudding?
I've asked myself that same question many times.

However, one time I plucked up the courage, and actually had some. And there was a big surprise.

It was good. It looks horrible, if you go by the name or think about it being made, you cringe, but at the end of the day, it's another tasty addition to a classic English breakfast.

INGREDIENTS:
3 quarts pork blood
1-1/2 pounds raisins
1-1/4 pounds sugar
1 pound mixed nuts & chestnuts
3/4 pound rice--cooked
2 oranges with all rind
1 pound figs
1 teaspoon red pepper
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons salt
bay leaf

As Fett says it tastes much much better than it sounds. I could probably have named about two of those ingredients, you just don't realise they are in there.

It's also a more spicy taste than a fruity taste, which the ingredients do not imply. It's good stuff if you can ignore what you know it to be.

Fuck
Cunt
Wank
Tosser
Arse
Pants
Bollocks
Cock
Turd
Tool

...are all examples of the four-letter folk etymology and the “Bald Anglo-Saxon Epithet” y way of a few Nordic/Latin invasions, thank you very much. Well, maybe not "pants"...
you forgot:

twat
minge
shag (maybe not really classed anymore, after Austin Powers title, but not something you would have really heard before 9 o clock previously)

and probably many more.
Yeah, when it was advertised on Sky, they had to call it Austin Powers 2. Couldn't say shag.
What does minge mean?
Also your definition of fanny is very different from ours, right?
minge is the same as cunt or twat or any of the other swear words referring to the female genitals.

so is fanny, except it's not used in quite the same derogatory manner.
So you wouldn't say compliment somone on their fanny and a fanny pack would carry some different connotations?
Put it this way: if you don't understand a british slang word your best bet is to guess it has something to do with the female genitals. Unless of course it just absolutely would not work in context, in which case the word probably is derived from a slang word for vagina.

pardon?

Not sure what was unclear, I was mostly just being funny. But I guess you wouldn't call a little waist pouch that some people wear a fanny pack.

One of the guys I worked with had traveled some in the US, and he got such a kick out of fanny packs. They call them bum bags.
That makes sense.
I think the original definition of Minge is pubic hair.

Hence the classic "ginger minge".
or minge-pants
If someone said they had a "fanny pack" in the UK, I'd expect them to be a pre-op tranny....
Minge pants ? If that the same as "pant beard" ?

For all your good british swear needs, I can recommend no finer place than the domain of one Mr Roger Mellie. His Profanisaurus is a wonder of the modern literary world
post #33 of 34
minge-pants, you know, those super super super low riders that the likes of Britney Spears and other skanky little starlets wear. don't get me wrong, i love low-rise jeans for the comfort factor alone, but if they're so low that you need to be completely shaved down there, that's too low.
Oh, thoooose.

God bless the soul that invented those.

*eyes glaze over in quiet contemplation of lowness*
