To me this story is funny. Its impossible to tell this far away with only an "unnamed candidate" in the survey. Pretty retarded really.

Its more an opinion poll than anything, at least thats how I saw it.

I think the main factor in a Democratic win would not be Bush himself, but a lack of third party voting. Personally, I couldn't possibly wager a guess as to who will win. If the previous election was re-done the day after to nullify the florida effect, I think the dems would have won, because I think it's pretty obvious that Nader lost Gore the election. People were eager to support a third party because they assumed that the dems would win no matter what. Well that sure didn't happen. Add to that the fact that recent events have made this a more conservative country and many people have changed their political persuasion. So who knows?

Just like Al Gore did to himself in 2000, the only person who can beat Bush at this point is Bush.
unless slick willy is back, i don't see W loosing to al sharpton...
That'd be freakin' funny though, wouldn't it?
It would be Kerry and Edwards not Sharpton and Gary Coleman.

He will win because we have no good candidates. Every fucking Democrat running is a complete moron. I flew on a plane with Lieberman last week and I wished I got a seat next to him. I would have grilled him.

Bateman's right. If they ran a serious Democrat, they could kick Bush's ass. Instead, every Democrat is just republican-lite. Hell, a lot of people don't vote simple for lack of a better option. When it was Gore vs. Bush, it was John Jackson vs. Jack Johnson. When are the Dems gonna grow a pair?

I'm sure Janet Reno and Hilary would take umbrage with those comments.

I'd vote for a dead raccoon before I voted for Bush.

Considering the rumors about those two, you might want to rethink your comment.

That's Ashcroft you're thinking of.

What do you Americans think about Hilary Clinton? Would she win Bush?
Heh heh..."win Bush".
I'm not sure anyone could beat Hilary in the bedroom.. wait a minute..
Lol guys but seriously what do you think?

I think Bush could easily lose the next election if a few things happen. Two of them being that this war in Iraq go bad and the economy tanks further. It'd be a strong bit of irony because his dad thought he could sail by after the Gulf war. Then when it came to the debates his trickle down economics platform got old pretty quick. Add all of that including some dumb comments he made and H.Ross Perot and hasta la vista.

Speaking of Hilary she has remained a hawk on the Iraq issue (While most of her party who voted pro war are now waffling and protesting). Knowing if she’s going to run for president in 08 that her record will be brought out. It also gives you a strong barometer of how she thinks this whole thing will turn out. Her husband or political partner (heh heh) is strongly advising her. Lets not forget that for the most part Bill Clinton handled Iraq and kept the status quo there (Sanctions and the like that were left from the Gulf war).

Furthermore old Bill has said some very interesting things of late regarding Iraq and North Korea. Well as for Hilary's aspirations for the White House. I'd say that I like her chances right now. If 50% of women in this country could vote her way she’s in. I'm not a big fan of hers but I must say I am deeply fascinated at the thought of her in the White House. Oh the Dems ticket against Bush in 04 is Kerry/Edwards.

Kerry may have to skew further left to get the nod. At this point, Lieberman is a dead man - he's far too centrist for the base he needs in the primaries. I wouldn't be surprised if Howard Dean makes a good run. He seems to be making up some ground on Kerry. Edwards doesn't have a prayer of becoming the nominee, but he could be a good VP candidate.
Thats why I said Kerry/Edwards. Kerry will be President and Edwards VP.

I'm no Bush fan, but don't write him off just yet.

I'm sure he's got some things up his sleeve to manipulate us all like a mutha.

Watch those gas prices drop, strangely... four to six months before the election...

I still think he's going to be very difficult to beat.

That's the problem with having "generic Democrat" as the competition. Who knows if said generic Democrat will be a centrist or a liberal? A liberal has a much better chance in the primaries, but I still think a centrist will be needed if they want to win in 2004.

I like Howard Dean.

Hillary has a big disapproval rating right from the start that's going to be tough to overcome. Yeah she polls well with the hardcore Democrats, but once you start asking about her to regular voters she's got something as high as 60% who say they wouldn't vote for her in one CNN poll.

She's playing the hawk, but most people rightly see her as a liberal. And naturally people are going to suspect that its just Bill in disguise, which will help with some and hurt with a lot of others.

Add to that the fact that I just don't see Hillary Clinton winning any state that is remotely conservative, something her husband had to do to win both times.

Howard Dean for 2004.
Democrats like this guy so much that they're not giving him any money and letting Hollywood pick up the tab.

Fuck Bush. His administration is turning this country into an egotistical, arrogant, scary, imperialistic Empire. I was totally for the invasion of Afganhistan, the only thing we could do at that point. But he, or most likely the others that pull his strings, has used 9/11/01 as an excuse to make war with the entire world.

He's making the same mistakes as his father - ignoring the economy, the unemployment rate, education, healthcare, etc, and I am willing to bet it will cost him in 2004.

I know the above has been said before, but it still feels all right to say it again.
I think that despite the tendency to get way liberal in response to Bush, the Democratic establishment will see Kerry as the best possibility to beat Bush nominate him. Kerry will then be his usual boring and scarily robotic self, Republicans will inevitably label him a Massachusetts liberal, and people will get a caricature of a guy who married the rich widow of a dead Republican and pays $70 to get his hair styled.
I don't think you said anything that was dead wrong there Stew. I simply made a case for Hilary. I agree many would rally against her but if the right things occur she could make it. I doubt that'd happen but you never know. It won't be Cheney running against her in 08 we know that. Republicans have to find a solid figure. Not another Bob Dole type.
Oh I have no doubt that Hillary will win the nomination. We're agreed that far. I mean its a no-brainer, Clinton is the only successful Democratic presidential name since 1976!

I think she'll lose for all the reasons I mentioned before, but I think they'd nominate her today if she had a better shot.

As for Republicans in '08, when I met J.C. Watts I told him if he ran for President I'd be his first volunteer to which he just smiled. He's the best speaker I've heard, so I wish he'd run. I'd say Jeb Bush will run someday, but I certainly hope for his sake not in '08. Bill Frist is a possibility too. Colin Powell could probably win in a general election, but nowadays I doubt whether he could get the Republican nomination.
She probably wouldn't be a Presidential candidate in '08, but Condoleeza Rice would make a great VP candidate.
