Shadow Of The Vampire

Just saw the film many of us have waited a while for.

Well, can't really form a definitive critique.

I liked it... a lot, in fact... but there were a few things that struck me odd about the pacing.

I'll have to see it again and let it sink in.

Still, if you love movies, SEE IT!

In defense of the film, it takes a lot of familiarity with the original NOSFERATU and the sensibilities of German Expressionism to "get" some of the stuff. (The pacing could have been part of the design)

However, my MODERN sense of cinema-viewing seemed to overule my love for those films and I can't help but feel there is 20-30 minutes on the cutting room floor somewhere (a luscious thought with the forthcoming DVD).

The film is nothing more than two good performances.

And that would be Dafoe and...Cary?
(Sorry, I think Malkovich is great...in certain roles, like Dangerous Liasons & In the Line of Fire. In most other roles, his voice drones on worse than Celine Dion. John, John, John...not every role requires monotonous atonal delivery...although I'm always facinated by his ability to seem completely full of rage and still sound like that, it's perfect for certain roles)

BTW, Nick...they did establish his drug addiction early on, in the second scene. Albeit, rather badly...Pink Floyd's The Wall had more coherency than that sequence.

I will say, however, that...despite the problems raised...I still enjoyed it, because it was better than I expected it to be. There's two deaths at the end, though, that felt like "Oh! It's the end! We need to up the body count to make the final scene look better!"

I was more concerned about Cary's voice than Malkovich. Sometimes it sounded really cool, but mostly it sounded like a muppet trying to do a funny german accent. The holes in the film were too big to ignore, and spoiled what could have been a really, really good movie. It seems like Shadow is the type of movie that could have gotten away with being longer than the average Hollywood film. Dafoe was worh the admission price though.

I think this film is more than two good performances.

Just saw it last night.

I loved Izzard, Dafoe, Malkovich (even though his accent was everywhere), Udeo Kier, and McCormack. Elwes was just kind of annoying, and had no grasp on his accent either.

The film did meander, but it did so in a way I enjoyed.

I just liked the atmosphere, the German expressionist bent, the cool goggles they wore as they filmed...the whole era it invoked just fascinated me.

The end was a little overdone, but it was worth it to see Catherine McCormack like that. Between Tailor of Panama and this, she's getting to be a favorite of mine.

Bad movie.

This movie totally holds up after 10+ years of simmering in the back of my mind. Great scenery chewing by the leads. Great premise and execution.
