I think the government breaking its own laws to get to the people who are against it is pretty much just proving the point of the protesters.
If the government wants to be a freedom loving republic based on democratic principals, it has to act that way. If a government acts like a tyrannical state, it's a tyranny, no matter what it calls itself. And breaking its own laws to get at those who oppose it is tyrannical.
