Secretary of State Colin Powell will release National Security Agency spy tapes next week that intelligence officials say show Iraq repeatedly lied to weapons inspectors, Newsweek magazine reported on Friday.

I'll bet good money this doesn't mean anything to most here and changes nothing about their feelings of the war.

Nor will it, until we actually see the evidence. My question is how long has the NSA had this evidence? Because unless they got lucky and overheard Saddam talking about hiding weapons grade plutonium up his ass yesterday, I'm suspicious of the timing of this revelation.

But like Jabba says, for many people the question isn't whether or not Saddam has these weapons, but whether war is the best immediate answer to the problem.

I want to see the tapes and I want the Bush administration to give ample time for the world to examine them before expressing a definite opinion.

However, I have a question. We know North Korea has weapons of mass destruction that cannot yet reach the US. The US tries diplomacy and wants to avoid military action, exactly because we know they have the weapons.
If Iraq does have the weapons, why's the US so eager to go to war and is not scared of them, like it does for the Korean ones?

Well this is a huge blow to the peacenik's belief that Hussein is the harbinger of a new age of peace and love.

What I think would be an interesting question to the peaceniks is: if it's proved that Iraq is violating thwe treaty and holds these weapons, what should be done about it?

Some sort of punishment needs to be given...stressing IF this is true...or you might as well just disband the whole UN. So what would be a decent option? To sanction the country won't hurt Hussein, and to get him out of power is going to take some fighting.

If there's hard evidence that proves beyond any reasonable doubt that Saddam has weapons of mass destruction and is lying to the international commynity, then I'd expect a new UN resolution and a deadline given to Saddam to explain himself and comply with the resolution.

When all this has happened and he's still not playing by the rules, then you come back and we'll discuss military action and the formation of a broader coalition to disarm Iraq.

I don't think that's too irrational or too much to ask.

How much of a deadline would you give him? Normaly I'd be lenient, but if in fact he has weapons, then that means he's been screwing the UN over for ten years. I wouldn't give him several months to comply, because he'd probably try to hide the stuff again. Maybe a week or two?

A new deadline isn't needed. The UN resolution adopted unanimoulsy by the security counsel calls for immediate action if he is in material breach. Which he is.

Where's the revelation? It's already been established that they've been deceptive about their weapons. I still fail to see how this merits overthrowing their government and killing untold numbers in a bombing spree.

According to CNN, Colin Powel stated that he's not going to offer a "smoking gun" about the existence of weapons of mass destruction, but intercepted communications showing that the Iraqi officials have not fully cooperated with the inspectors.

That's weak, it's not proof that Saddam has hidden weapons and the fact that the Iraqi have not been 100% helpful has already been told. By the inspectors thmeselves. Not a very shocking revelation and not something htat will change anyone's mind about the coming destruction.
