Al Qaeda is planning a mass-casualty attack to rival September 11, but preparations have been disrupted by arrests of terrorists during the past several months, according to U.S. intelligence officials...Additionally, the intelligence reports stated that any major attack is likely to be preceded by smaller-scale strikes, including assassinations of prominent people in the United States, the official said.

Look, before anyone says it, Phil Spector is NOT an Al Qaeda agent, and the Barbarian Queen lady was not a 'prominent' American.

Time to ramp up the fear level in the old USA before aggressing against Iraq.

The beauty of a statement like this is that there's no way to disprove it. Without facts, it's hardly news, but it does serve to a) let people know that the "War On Terror" is being won, somehow, but b) you should still keep waiting for another airplane to drop on your head.

Yup, fingernail chewing time...

Maybe Phil Spector was an Al Qaeda agent!

I've hated annoucements like this from the start. "We might be attacked. We don't know when. We don't know where. We don't know how, but it'll be sometime soon. We ask that citizens be vigilant." Fuck that. First off, you have to assume that if someone wants to get you badly enough, they will. Second, the government and the media need to stop trying to scare everyone before the masses realize what a fuckin joke this all is.

I agree that the vague terrorist threats are terrible, but it is a catch-22. Either you give the announcement and everybody complains about "that's too vague" or you say nothing, a building blows up, and the public says "why wasn't there a warning?"

Unless they know building a is going to get blown up, what good is a warning?

Let's wait and see whether any legitimate newspapers (i.e. those not owned and operated by Reverend Sun Myung Moon) run with this story.

I'm not saying there isn't a shred of truth to this story, mind you; I just don't trust a word printed in that rag.

Why should the public be warned at all? If I know of a certain Greyhound station targeted for destruction (what a shame), I'd warn the people running the Greyhound station. The station shuts down, the bomb is found, and then the announcement is made to the public.

I think it would keep the panic down, such as it is, and also keep cries of "Wolf!" to a minimum.
