What the Hell is going on in Venezuela?

Has anybody been following this story closely?

The democratically elected government is being threatened with eviction by the oil companies? Democracy is being hijacked by international corporate gangsters and not a peep of indignation coming from Dubya's crew?

That's what happens when you are a nuisance to big interests.

And I'm still waiting on the serious high-level debate on Argentina, which followed the International Monetary Fund instructions to the letter and went bust as a result.

Debate from the IMF, the G8 and other big shots, not chewers!

In what universe is Hugo Chavez an example of democracy?

I didn't see "oil companies" marching in the street calling for the overthrow of the dicatator and friend of Castro. I saw Venenzuelan citizens by the millions doing it.

Maybe we should send Jimmy Carter back in.

American leaders have a history of putting democracy behind their own interests, it's not just Dubya.

If there's ever a 5th Lethal Weapon I have the perfect generic villain for Donner: OIL COMPANIES!

The white South African leadership is no more

Weapons suppliers to L.A. gangs just isn't sexy enough

Evil Asian organized crime would be percieved as too racist

And Mr. Joshua is dead

But we'll always have extraordinarily evil white guys running oil companies. Thank God for that.

Erm, sorry but isn't a dictator a person that seizes power by force or refuses to step down after his term expires and not someone who was elected into office, like a year ago?

I saw these Venezuelan citizens marching in the streets, too. They were calling for the CIA to get the hell out of their country and stop meddling in their government's affairs. What the hell was that all about?
No, I'm pretty sure thay were calling for the ouster of their leader who was democratically elected, but has since become a dictator. It does happen, you know?

the Vennys voted Chavez into office. Now, they want him out.

Yeah, I read the news from the American capital every day.

Wait, so now you can finally admit that George W. Bush was rightfully elected? How sweet! You've finally come around.

Just because they want him out of office doesn't make him a dictator.

Hehe. Btw the CIA needs to leave South America the hell alone.

"They" are the ones we should really be worried about here.

By the way, exactly what is CIA doing apart from messing up with small countries?

They are the guys that failed to see the collapse of the Soviet Union, right before it happened, and completely failed to protect the US people from Bin Laden: Not only they armed and trained him but didn't have a clue on 9/11.

And they are gettign your tax money.

Oh, just the usual thing. Organizing the overthrow of unfriendly heads of state, gathering armies of paid thugs to stage demonstrations and threaten dissenters against US foreign policy with permanent "silencing". Another day at the office.

Hitler was democratically elected. Does that mean that the Third Reich was a democracy?

Just because Venesuelans elected a Marxist, and now they realize their mistake doesn't mean they should just deal with it. Those people who are striking have every right to do so. There was an article in the WSJ about the people leading the strike - ordinary workers, not the oil companies, not the CIA.

The CIA has been underfunded for years. How in the world could they be messing up small countries if they are the Keystone Kops that you claim they are? In the future, they may be more of a force, but they aren't that now.

Can we bring up the past, or not? if we can, let's do it on both sides of the argument. If we could also keep things in context (the Russian invasion of Afghanistan) that would be nice.

Because they don't like their choice, he has become a dictator? I understand your use of the Third Reich but give me a break. Hitler had the full support of his country in becoming a dictator.

Has this president stated that he is going to stay in power no matter what the next elections may be? I guess I am confused about at which point he became a dictator.

hitler didn't step down after his term was over or called for new elections.

I hate the CIA. That George Herbert Bush(former CIA director) was elected president is still humorous. Truman created the CIA knowning that it cannot be controlled yet he still created it. Truman also gave the go ahead with the bombings in Dresdan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I'm not a big fan of Truman.

WW2 has shaped this world in many ways. We were primarily isolationist before and after we went full tilt with foreign policy thus the world we live in today. I am no fan of the CIA I wish it could be dismantled. JFK saw the dangers the CIA posed and was ready to splinter it up but alas that did not happen.

And, for some counterpoint to the "liberal" US media version of events:

And an eyewitness account of the violence most media outlets blamed on pro-Chavez elements:
