International Day of Action Against War in Iraq

Is anyone else going out to protest on Saturday?

I'm proud to announce that my friend and I have organized the first (we think) peace demonstration in Cornwall, Ontario. For those of you that don't know, Cornwall is the armpit of Eastern Ontario and is generally looked down upon by everyone. Unfortunately, they're normally justified, but we hope to make this place slightly less apathetic and uninteresting.

I should be poking my head out on Saturday for the protest NYC refuses to give a permit for.

How funny would it be if there were a terrorist attack on that rally?
Not really funny because Iraq has no ties to the terrorism we're dealing with.

Should be interesting to see who turns out.
(edited because well just because)

Mostly Americans who want to exercise their First Amendment right to share their opposition to this act of aggression.

Probably not that funny. It would actually be a real tragedy. I'm sure you would have a good old belly laugh about it. Schmuk.

It wouldn't be funny at all. It would be absolutely horrible.

Ironic, yes. Funny no.

How would it be ironic? Iraq is not Al Qaeda.

Which is part of the fucking point. Although you guys equate all Arabs.

Well dev, it is an anti-war, pro-terrorist demonstration.

Ah another baseless racist accusation.

What day would be complete without?

Jesus Christ Jabba.

Maybe you should stay away from the politics forum. It seems that all conviction has been beaten out of you.

I'll tell you what fucking pisses me off. It seems like our goddamn government isn't doing apricot one in protecting our country. Thats just fucking great. While we get fucking A-bombed and gassed, our proud government tells us to defend ourselves with goddamn duct tape. Fuck it.

Please explain why you would equate the attack of Iraq with terrorist acts in this country? Name the Iraqis on the 9/11 planes, please.

WASHINGTON - A senior government official said Friday the administration now believes some of the information which led to upgrading the nation's terror threat level last week to orange, or high, was likely fabricated.
Authorities drew that conclusion based on polygraphs given to terrorist suspects interviewed by the government, said this official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The apparent fabrication was first reported by ABC News.

Yeah, it's kind of like the pot calling the kettle....ah nevermind. Devin actually brings up a very good point. The ties between Saddam and terrorism are tenuous at best. Plus, to make this even simpler, it would be the exact opposite of Saddam's interests to bomb these anti-war rallies. Not every Arab's motivations are the exact same.

Pre-emptive protest for Pre-emptive war. Life has a sense of humor.

Go ahead, morons, protest. No one gives a rat's butt. I know I don't. You know what? I don't give a rat's butt if the United States nukes the whold goddamned Earth. I don't give a rat's butt if the whole world just implodes. I just don't FUCKING CARE ANYMORE.
Neither do I, unfortunatly. This whole world can go blow itself to bits. I don't care.

And I have a sinking feeling about tomorrow. Please be careful, those of you who are going. Don't let yourself be provoked into violence.

I'll stop being idealistic and pathetic now...

People who don't care, kindly remove yourselves from the Earth to make room for those of us who do.

Go fuck yourself.

On second thought, don't. Sorry. I'm in a bad mood today. I'm just having a really hard time making up my mind on this issue. I really wish there was some place I could go or a course I could take that would allow me to see BOTH sides of the issue in a fair and balanced manner. At NYU it seems to be nothing but "protest, protest, protest," and no one ever seems to be offering to explain anything as to what the other side thinks. It's all propaganda of one form or another, IMO.

And that, to me, is frustrating beyond belief. I should have made up my mind as to where I stand a long time ago, but I'm having a hard time with it. And I feel so stupid discussing this issue with people. And I'm made to feel that way in the conversations I've had. On one hand, yes, Saddam should be removed. That I believe. But I also beleive the manner we're going about it is all wrong. I don't want to be a fence sitter or a sheep and go with the crowd, I'm just having a difficult time dealing with the whole issue. I love my country, and I love what it stands for. It's just so frustrating. We had a chance after World War II to make something of the world. And we fucked it up. We had a chance to look at ourselves as a species and say "Never Again." And yet we seem to have done jack shit since then, and created new problems for ourselves, or fallen back on the same old problems we've had for thousands of years. I know it's cliche, but can't we all just get along? Is that too hard to ask? Or are we just a species intent on destroying ourselves? Do we thrive on pain? Is that what drives us?

Getting back to topic, our little protest today was somewhat of a mixed bag. It was frighteningly cold (-20 C without windchill) and not many people showed up (a couple dozen at our most numerous), but I'm not sure if that really matters. There was simply something nice about walking around with a bunch of people who dragged their asses out of their houses to join a protest organized by two high school kids. Talking to people who actually believed that a better world is possible made me appreciate Cornwall just a little bit more. I feel that had it not been freakishly cold, we would have seen at least twice as many people.

We did however get the local member of parliament to show up and we learned he's a spineless weasel. As well the local newspaper sent an extremely groovy reporter who should give us a nice write-up in Monday's paper.

We're going to try and organize another protest in March with an outdoor concert featuring some local bands and a few speakers. If we can get 150-200 people (what a lot of local shows draw) then my nipples will explode with delight.
