MTV takes Iraq tack
Cabler prepping war-related programming

By Pamela McClintock
WASHINGTON -- Following its tradition of exploring the political landscape, MTV News said Thursday that it is developing a number of programs on Iraq.

Exec veep of news and production Dave Sirulnick said a recent survey shows that America's young people are greatly alarmed about the conflict -- more alarmed, in fact, than about terrorism.
"Our audience has made it overwhelmingly clear that they want more information on the issues concerning the situation with Iraq, and that a potential war is a No. 1 concern," Sirulnick said.
On Thursday, the net will premiere an MTV NewsNow Special Report on what a war could mean for young people. Should a war start before then, MTV will return to the field and contact people previously interviewed.

MTV Daily News will produce a series of story packages, domestically and internationally. The net intends to cover the reaction on various campuses around the country as well as war protests and counterprotests. The news division also will develop an "Iraq 101" primer on why the U.S. could go to war with Iraq.

MTV News anchor Gideon Yago will travel to Kuwait, reporting on the mood of young Kuwaitis in the region, as well as U.S. troops deployed in the Persian Gulf.

Background info
There will be any number of "What's Going On" segments devoted to Iraq, including biographies of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, among others.
There also will be stories on the United Nations and the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security.
MTV's cinema verite series "True Life" will follow young soldiers as they prepare to go off to war.

Music cabler will also air promotional spots featuring artists voicing their opinions and reading quotes from historical figures.

The recent survey cited by MTV showed that of the 600 young people interviewed, only about half said they trusted President Bush's statements regarding Iraq.

And the other half interviewed replied "Who is Bush?"

Having Bill Clinton play the sax once in your network, a tradition of covering political issues does not make.

By the way, I remember MTV playing the video for "Give Peace a chance" the morning the Gulf war started. And back then, there was a reason for war. Not to mention support.

We've really gotten more casual on large-scale mayhem and destruction during the last decade or so.

Why, if only the sale of newspapers wasn't restricted to underground "News Dens" instead of being readily available on every street corner, maybe the kids could find this information for themselves, without getting Fred Durst to act it out for them.

By the way, I refuse to believe that Gideon Yago is the name of an actual person.

Are they going to have pop-up-video with comments from Saddam Hussein? Maybe an episode of The Real World where the real world kids go on vacation to the front lines and proceed to have sex in the middle of the battlefield.

Sadly, I'm kidding. They were spoof MTV presenters from the fucking brilliant UK news satire The Day Today. Also featured an interview with gangsta rapper Fur Q who shot audience members on stage ("These killings are obviously ironic" according to Rolling Stone) and Nirvana performing the theme to a pantyliner commercial ("the comfy pal who says 'never mind'")

Her name cracks me up. Yes, I am fully aware of how childish that is.
