Ridge: No Need to Panic Over Terror Alert

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge sought to calm a jittery America on Friday, saying there is no need to panic over the prospect of fresh terrorist attacks.

Preparations for a possible attack makes sense, but people do not need "to start sealing the doors or windows," Ridge told reporters at the headquarters of the new Cabinet department. There is no plan to either raise or lower the current government assessment that the level of terrorist threat is high, Ridge said.

A week after increasing the nation's terrorist alert status from yellow to "high risk" orange, President Bush (news - web sites) said the decision was a "stark reminder of the era that we're in, that we're at war and the war goes on."

Care to clarify?

Are you saying they are only making these little speeches at press conferences?

And how well can we make a determination on the impact of this office only a few weeks after its inception?

I'm saying what is the point of an office that exists to issue deadly warnings and then...simply retract them days later?

They don't guard borders. INS does.

They don't coordinate intelligence. CIA does.

They have neither the funding nor the manpower to adequately defend this country. So why are they there?

THAT is my question.

And as soon as the answer is found e-mail me. I've been trying to obtain this information as well.

Homeland Security is a money-pit in my opinion. And now shown with a big ol' egg on their face. Sad.

Likewise, the Dept. of Education hasn't educated a single child. The Dept. of Energy doesn't supply anyone with energy. Get rid of all the Cabinet offices that cannot be Constitutionally justified. I guess that would pretty much leave the Dept. of Defense and Homeland Security could fall under that heading.

Actually, the Dept. of Homeland Security gets a majority of its law enforcement agencies from the Dept. of Treasury, not the Dept. of Defense.

Actually, Homeland Security would indeed be Constitutionally justified as the Federal Government's primary duty is to protect and defend the people of the United States.

But its job should already have been done by the other agencies: INS, FBI, FEMA, CIA, etc. Why another Cabinet-level agency sucking away more tax dollars?

Because you can't put a price on scaring the american public into doing what you want.

Because it's the government's job to give the people what they want, and what they want is a Homeland Security Department. Who cares if it costs us more, as long as we can keep it under our pillow as a talisman against insecurity.
