Anyone Here In Aerospace getting Fucked by the War?

Found out last week that my dad, who works for Canadair/Bombardier and has for the last 12 years, got laid off.

He's 55.

There is no real chance given how this sector is doing that he will see another aerospace job to save his life. My mom and him were good with money, and should be able to weather this ok, but damn. The guy's never been laid off in his whole life.

I know there are some of you out there that work in this industry too. How has it been going with your jobs? Your companies, have they been laying people off too?

I don't understand why they would be laying people off. It seems that they would need new planes and missiles and flying stuff.

Mike, my sympathies to your father.

Devin, don't be a troll.

How am I trolling? I honestly am under the impression that wartime is a boom time for aerospace. Back off you little dope.

Aerospace contracts are weird. My Dad was laid off from the company which did ALL of the research and development on the Polaris missile back in the early 60's. In fact Dad invented a new way of installing the igniter that was protective of the propellant.

Anyway, the Government gave the contract to another firm in the East that was already tooled up to produce the units. So Aerojet had to give up all their research materials, plans, and data after doing all the work.

The layoff virtually wiped out both the company and the community of Folsom, CA. Aerojet didn't come back until they got the contract to do the Orbital Maneuvering System of Shuttle. But never as big as they were during the Kennedy's Cold War missile boom.

[Edited cause he's just not worth it.]

Devin, you are not trolling and I am not offended by your question. Canadair has no military contracts. They produce 40-60 seat passenger jets for civilian airlines. With the one-two punch of 9-11 and now this war, consumer confidence is low, and with even less people predicted to be flying this year, many customers of Canadair have cancelled their jet orders.

Ah, that makes sense. The airlines are taking it up the pooper these days. Trickle down economics seems to work best in these sorts of situations, when it's shit that is trickling down.

The really sad thing is that, prior to serious war talks starting, the industry was all set to have the comeback all of the airlines were hoping for. A summer without war would have done wonders for the industry as a whole.
