Is anyone else getting Al-Jazeera footage?

Peter C. Miller.

That's what one of the allegedly captured soldiers identified him as.

He said he's from Kansas.

Look, I'm as against this war as anyone, but I'll give it to you guys straight...You guys should be proud of that soldier. He's keeping up really well under what must be a ton of pressure, which brings me to my second point...I'm not 100% sure that this is POW footage, or simply a soldier talking to Al-Jazeera.

If he isn't a POW, and I've taken this the wrong way, I apologise.

Either way, even though I can't understand a word of what is being said, my cable service is running an Arabic channel that a few of my friends have identified as Al-Jazeera.

I've seen at least 4 dead US Soldiers.

One of them appeared mutilated. Either that or his hands were way up in his sleeves. He was in the road, and there was some sort of truck near to him...a few trucks. There was an open passenger door on one with blood on the seat. He still had his helmet and clothes on.

Ok, they're showing it again now. It's one truck, and it's towing some sort of small attachment with wheels behind it.

The other 4 were lying in various states of undress in what appeared to be someone's yard. There were at least two headshots among the bunch. There were three white guys and a black guy, and yeah, it looked very convincing. They were wearing (well, partly) US army gear.

Other than that we've seen lots of footage of dead and injured Iraqis, and some footage of the bombing from a much, much closer perspective than the other media. A few of bombs act differently from how I thought. They seem to land, and THEN explode a second or two later. Some of the shots were scarily close to the camera...I'm talking about a block and less.

They're showing those dead soldiers again. Definitely 4 guys. 2 are lying partially on top of each other.

I'm also seeing what appears to be an Iraqi body near to them.

This POW guy is back...I'll listen to it and post again.

Okay, I'll make sense of this.

Miller identified himself as Private First-Class Miller.

He was asked:

Why did you come here?

"I came here because I was told to."
"I came here because I was ordered to."
"I came here to fix broke stuff."

"I only shot at them if they shot back. I didn't mess with them."

Miller is a tall, somewhat skinny white guy with a crew-cut (like all of them) and glasses. He looks definitely afraid, but as I said...he's holding up.

And there was another guy. Shorter, darker.
585650287...El Paso Texas...Hudson?

He was asked:
Have the Iraqi people met you with flowers or with guns?

How have they received you...were they...human or were they...with guns?

He didn't seem to understand the questions, and said as such. There really was a jumble of voices, and very few were English.

Another wounded soldier. Injured. Arm bandaged. Hector. From Texas.

And the last guy:
Sgt James Riley. Uninjured.

All of these guys seemed to be in the same place that the bodies were being stored. Same type facility at least. Looked like it could be a house or a medical facility.

What the fuck...footage just ended and three Arabic words just covered the screen. And now a video about peace is playing.

And now there's some black and white old Arabic movie playing.

Fucking animals.

not to be morbid but did the headshots look like exacutions after capture? I heard or saw somewhere(maybe on here) where the exacuted an American soldier after capture.

Huh? What a weird thing to say. Is he a mechanic or something?

I don't want to incur the wrath of the righties, and I have only seen the two pics on that link above, but at least these people don't look too fucked up.

Maybe he didnt want to give too much information away, since when you get captured you're only allowed to give out certain information.

It's a WAR.

Most of the POWs don't look injured, and the one who IS injured is lying on a mattress and bandaged cleanly.

The reporters are acting very civilly, and the one who spoke to the injured POW helped him sit up and supported his back and neck as he spoke.

Quite frankly, this is way better than I expected for captured US soldiers.

It's heartening to see the young guys alive.
It was in reference to the possibility that the dead bodies may have been mutilated.

At least one did, yes.

Another guy's whole front side was bloody.
Well maybe he was weary or tired, or "out of it" kinda when he gave the response "broke stuff"
It was reported that they were part of a maintenance crew, which would explain the "fix broke stuff" comment.

I think he was trying to keep his English as simple as possible for the reporters to understand him.

Oh you've got to be kidding!
Doubtful. The reporters, if they had poor English, wouldn't understand his idiom. My understanding is that military guys speak with excruciating specificity.

Hey, I was watching the guy.

That's how it looked. He wasn't looking as if he was in pain, although he did look scared.

He spoke...you know the way...when you speak to people who can't speak English well.

You'll see eventually, but no Kronos, I'm not "kidding" about anything in this thread.

Is that a picture of an American executing an Iraqi?

No.
What is that image meant to prove?
It proves that the news networks show pictures of Iraqi POWs in violation of the Geneva Convention, if Rummy is correct.

And there is no footage of executions as far as I know, but I could be wrong.
aljazeera.net is down. I'll bet they're being flooded.
CNN is reporting that the Iraqis have announced that they will treat the POWs as specified by the Geneva convention. I certainly hope this is true.
Also, the Red Cross woman on CNN is cute.
It doesn't look to me like that shot is of POWs. It looks to me like that is an image of the moment when a pair of Iraqis might be about to become POWs. A shot of a surrender. It's a small semantic point, but probably important if we're dealing with a code of law.

As to the actual wording in the Geneva convention, I haven't a clue.
Well, CNN just played footage of POWs being searched. I think it's hard to deny that we have been showing enemy POWs.

<img src="http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/interactive/world/0303/iraq.surrender.101/silence.iraq.jpg" alt="" />
PS, the wording says that POWs must be protected from humiliation and public curiosity, which is vague wording. I think it's meant to keep POWs from being paraded around on the back of trucks and shit, I DON'T think it's supposed to cover news reports.
To the best of my knowledge, showing pictures of POW's does not violate the Geneva Convention. The legal experts commenting on Canada's CBC news seem to agree.

According to CNN(or MSNBC/Fox i can't remember) Government controlled Iraqi tv, had the Iraq flag on the mic, were interviewing the soldiers. Plus there was a Iraqi press conference where one Iraqi VP said they would show American POW's.

That is different than Independent journalists who capture Iraqi soldiers surrendering. I'm not sure if what American and British tv is crossing the line, no international law degree here.
Why is it different?
Just a guess but it's different because the Iraqi gov't is producing these videos of American soldiers in captivity. The U.S. gov't isn't making videos of capyured soldiers. They tell the reporters and stations not to show certain things because it's against the law.

Does anyone know if just a picture or video of a POW is wrong? Or is it because the Iraqi gov't is interrogating the U.S. soldiers on tv.
You can read the Geneva Convention in the link above.

It seems to me that Rummy is, yet again, full of shit.
They are saying the difference is embedded journalists for Independant News has shown Iraqi people surrendering etc...
But the Iraqi tape, was produced BY the Iraq Government.

I dont know what the legality of it all really is , but thats the point they are driving home.

When I am under pressure I have made similar grammatical errors.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"No, me have no idea."

Irony abounds.

At the time of that post I didn't know who he was with.

Still, fix broke stuff? That kid was a shop major.
