Has the U.N. been castrated?

Is the resolution of this event proof of the U.N.'s lack of authority, or George W. Bush's lack of recognition of that authority?

I side with the latter. They did it to the League of Nations, and now the same has happened to the United Nations.

How can they resolve any issues ever again? Countries now realize that they can just ignore the U.N. and do what they want without fear of reprisal.

Has Democracy failed?

The U.N. does not, nor has it ever, equaled democracy.

Neither does the Bush administration, but let's not split hairs.

If I'm not mistaken the U.N. has only approved 2 wars/conflicts in it's history. It has survived that I'm sure it will survive this.

This is a far reaching campaign though, politically that is. The fact that U.S. officials were willing to go through offical channels and recognize the authority of the UN was interesting. They only followed the "rules" so long as they were in their intrests. As soon as opposition began to mount it seems they bailed out on them.

The lack of belief in Global responsibility was obvious (to me anyways) in this action. It reinforces my belief that this war is all about the country's intrests rather than global security

You have to have balls in the first place in order to be castrated.

Bush thinks the way to world peace is by saying "fuck you" to the UN. He's wrong. All that does is tear the "world peace" that the UN is trying to develop.

Oh, you mean like the hosts of other nations who have ignored the UN?

I would venture to say every nation in the world has defied the UN at one time or another. Of those nations, how many were really punished? 2. N. Korea and Iraq. Even then, the UN did a lousy job of following through with the conditions of surrender/armistice.

You can't enforce world peace with happy thoughts and sunflowers.

Oh please...the U.S. has done nothing but accede to UN demands and rules since 1991. How many times has the other side done so?

And now that the USA actually prosecutes the last in a long line of UN declarations you say we have a lack of recognition of UN "authority"? HAH!

Reason is lost on some...
