Newspapers

What ones do you read, if any[I'm sure some of you just make shit up wink ]?

For me, it's the Globe and Mail, and The Guardian. The Globe is one of Canada's two national newpapers. It tends to be dry. The other national paper is the National Post, a more accessible paper, it tends to shirk objectivity for taking sides. Since the company which owns the post owns the local rag—also read, but does not warrant the title: 'newspaper'—I can get most of my 'opinionated' journalism locally. The Post, and local rag, are right-wing by Canadian standards. The Globe is centre-conservative.

The Guardian, in the opinion of some, is a socialist media conspiricy. This is not true. It also happens to be one of the best 'international' papers on the planet. Which why I fork over the ludicrous amount of money it costs to read the weekend edition.

Idle curiosity.

I read the Montreal Gazette, the National Post and the Sunday New York Times. Funny thing about the National Post is that we've never subscribed or paid for it and have gotten it since its inception. I think it's a pretty weak excuse for a newspaper, although their world section is pretty solid, and the Gazette is decent, but poorly organized. The Sunday New York Times is a good read and the New York Times Magazine always has some interesting articles. Did anyone else read about the Guns N Roses cover band a few weeks ago? I think the picture of them was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a magazine.

For real news, I read the Globe and Mail or the Wall Street Journal, usually on-line. For local news I read the Calgary Herald; if I avoid the editorials I'm usually okay. I ditched my subscription to that when one of the columnists started proclaiming his mother's killing of a cat for piddling on slippers is biblically justifiable (this is a weird town), but I'll pick it up now and then. I read the Herald because the alternative is the Calgary Sun, which is...well, it's the Sun, and not to be taken too seriously.

Is that because there are too many or too few scantily clad women in it?
