Burned out politically

Thread Starter
With the war, North Korea, SARS, the Middle East in general, tax cuts, and all things pundit, I'm not feeling very caring about the world right now.

Maybe it's overkill on the media's part, or maybe this was intended, to inundate us with the news until we just throw our hands up in frustration, but I could just give a flying fuck right now about politics or the world affairs.

I'm 33, married with a child. I don't have time to rally round the flag or whatever cause you want to put in front of me. I do have opinions on these matters, but man, right now all I want to do is dive head first into some serious escapism.

Basically I'm fed up with all things political right now. Which is probably how "they" want us. Now's the time when some truly heinous shit could get past us and we'd never really know about it, or if we did, the world would be too apathetic to care.

Anyone care to discuss this?

I'm a little annoyed that all the talkshows I listen to on public radio, that usually interview interesting authors and such, have had nothing but war-related content for months now.

Nordling you magnificant bastard! Here are 5 stars! You're just said has been eating at me for 2 months. It's sucked all the life out of me and I'm so damn tired. The bad guys are winning. And I just recently found out that, according to the Office of Foreign Assest Control, I'm part of 'the man' now too.

But just keep in mind that we can't depend on others to fight our fights for us no matter how bad it gets.

It's pervasive throughout all levels of our society. Yes, I've gotten so burned out in recent weeks that I couldn't even bring myself to post here for days. Sure, I'd read the threads with a modicum of interest but I didn't reply for several days I recall.

When I get home from work I have been keeping myself pretty far away from the TV too. I have four of those damned things staring me in the face as I type this.

Kronos, considering where you work, is there an awful lot of current events discussion there, or is it just like any other workplace? Just curious.

And as for the topic at hand, I'm beyond burnout. The Daily Show is about as close to as I get lately to watching the news. I do more reading of online news websites, but there it's easier to choose what you want to know about.

it's time to move on... care about those next to you. worrying about everything that's happening will only cause you to consider suicide.

I have vacation coming up in June (a real vacation and not some extended weekend) my girlfriend, family, friends and Jerry Bruckheimer flicks. Time to chill.

Actually, no. However: In my particular position I deal with an awful lot of the public. And they can be tremendously exhausting. Either we -as a station- are too conservative(pro-war, in their parlayance) or too liberal(anti-war, in the same parlayance). You see, in my market the typical PBS fare doesn't perform well(ie: ratings) so we show a lot of science, technology, etc. If we show a NOVA which features a fighter jet, for example, we are pro-war in many viewer's eyes. If we show Charlie Rose in primetime(which we cannot do because the program literally doesn't rate here) we're accused of pandering to the liberal left. And being on the public relations side of the business I hear, write, and talk to them all.

The difficulty is in maintaining one's objectivity and to focus a conversation on what's best for KVIE. Something the caller/viewer does not and will not(practically refuses to) understand. Which takes a lot out of one.

I'm a news junkie, so all this stuff hasn't burnt me out, but I do get sick of the stories that get blown out of proportion for no reason other than ratings. These include things like tuning into a news program/station expecting to get coverage of multiple stories and hear a news conference with somebody that doesn't know anything or won't say anything. That is not news.

Not burnt out. Nowhere near.

The last 6 months to a year has really chrystalized things for me. I'm still as passionate about the stuff as I ever was. More so even. But the appeal of debating things endlessly here has been tarnished considerably.

I'm with you 100% on this, but at least I don't have the sick feeling in my stomach anymore... cause I just don't care.

Indeed. Debating here has lost a lot of its former luster.

Well said Matt.

Of course that will happen. It always does. That's, like, how the world works, man.
