defend freedom - what freedom?

In the Irak discussions and other international conflicts I repeatedly read an argument made by americans concerning their freedom. It was said that most people from around the world, would secretly envy the freedom americans have. This seemed odd to me. Since the passing of the Patriot Act:
<a href="http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/lawsregs/patriot.pdf" target="_blank">Patriot Act</a>

there seemed to be not much freedom left.
And I am relieved to see that now some one noticed it too.

An even brighter and saver future awaits you. Ever heard of Terrorist Information Awareness?

<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A17121-2003May20.html" target="_blank">washingtonpost.com on TIA</a>

This massive computer surveillance system will identify people at great distances by the irises of their eyes, the grooves in their face or even their gait. It would look for suspicious patterns in video footage of people's movements. And it would analyze airline ticket purchases, visa applications, as well as financial, medical, educational and biometric records to try to predict terrorists' acts or catch them in the planning stage.

You may think, well Terrorist Information Awareness sounds similar to the Total Information Awareness program, witch created in some minds the impression that TIA was a system to be used for developing dossiers on U.S. citizens, and actually it is the same.
They just changed the name.

I for one have never bought into the B.S. that America is the land of the free. But try to convince the average American of this fact and the least you'll hear is that you're some commie conspiracy theorist. Your post is simply more evidence proving that this country and our leaders are full of shit.

I'm not a fan of the Patriot act. However I hope it works in capturing Al Qaeda financing and seizing those terrorists who are here. Things change sadly and when a massive terrorist attack happens in your homeland things will never be the same. I hope you never have to deal with anything like 9/11 in Germany.

Thank you. I certainly hope so too.

But within your quote lies a misunderstanding I would like to discuss in this post. Just because we had no 9/11 tragedy in Germany, does not mean we don’t understand the necessity for security Americans have. I think the terrorist threat is pretty real.
I just disagree in the way the Bush Admin handles this threat. In my opinion their actions aim mainly at a total domination of the American citizens and just in second place against terrorist attacks.

So why should I care? Well, the only ones who can change something about that are the American citizens themselves. The USA and Germany depend on each other on many levels. And when the US becomes a police state, Germany will suffer as well.

Yeah well we'll see in due time I imagine.
