Civil disobediance redux

I would like to revisit this topic in light of this bit of news:

A number of firehouses in New York City have been shut down due to the ongoing fiscal crisis. Communities have been up in arms about it.

Yesterday was the actual day of the closings, and people across the city protested strongly and decisively, including using civil disobediance to block the physical closing of the houses, by taking them over, jamming the doors, etc etc. A number of people were arrested. Many of them were middle aged or older.

Just curious if the rabid hate for civil disobediance shown here by the far right wingers extends to these people.

And they aren't blocking traffic, which seems to be an issue in these sorts of things. God knows why.

Convinience. Do whatever you want on the sidewalk, but I've got to get to work.

Leave home earlier and take a different route.

I find parades inconvenient. I deal with them. Part of life in the big city.

Hey, Steve Buscemi got arrested at these protests! Let's hear you folks bitch about celebrities getting political!

Gary Busey should look into these protests. He could fit a whole protest sign onto one of his teeth. He could just smile, and unleash upon the traffic jams great slogans!

Buscemi's a former firefighter - he's got a legit beef and firsthand experience.

Terrible that the Apple's losing firehouses. Seems to me that makes things less safe - nevermind the rich history and tradition.

I mean - fuck the landmark status of old buildings - closing these houses will destroy response times.

Dev - instead of trying to cheesily bait the cheesy right, maybe you should direct your energy toward a breakdown of the locations of these houses - whaddya' wanna' bet they closed a bunch of firehouses in...neigborhoods of questionable financial clout?

How deep, Jason. Also glad to know you are the arbiter of who has a legit beef.

Not all, just the stupid ones.

There's really not a right/left issue here, but there is a right/wrong issue. Closing firehouses is, for the most part, wrong. There are resources elsewhere that can be diverted to better serve the firefighting needs of a population. I always thought that firehouses came under the heading of essential services.

Do you read the threads? This is not a discussion about shutting down firehouses. It's a thread about civil disobediance that happens to include a bit about celebrities getting involved in politics.

The right wingers on these boards have shown nothing but disdain for these tactics. The point I wanted to make was that you hypocrites have a problem with the issues and not the tactics.

Ok, you're right. I was probably a bit off target in responding about the salient reason for the protest instead of addressing protesting itself.

But I've said before that I'd protest the correct thing if it became necessary.
