Intriquing.

Though the can of worms something of this nature could open would be staggering. It is one of those things that would be hell to watch over.

I do like the thought of elminating the chance to vote for what benefits you the most rather than American overall (which would be benefiting the person the most). But democracy can be quite twisted and this has a high chance of failure.

Well I suppose in light of situations like Martha Stewart I'll go ahead and bump this and see if I get any takers on a little debate here...

So if you work for government, you shouldn't be allowed to vote because your vote will be biased, as opposed to the richest 1 percent of this country, who are not only allowed to vote, but to influence campaigns with their massive donations and "fundraising."

This is a foolhardy premise. Whose vote is not biased? Why should you NOT vote for that which favors you? Any proponent of any issue can spin why it - and the opposing position - is for "the common good." So, now what?

You have different positions and lobbies who all claim what they want is in the common good, but they all conflict. What then? Who is to be the grand determiner of who should vote and who should note?

Sounds like a crap idea to me.

Right, because ultimately as an American one should vote what is best for America. Or at least what one believes is right.

They're synonymous. Voting is your attempt to fashion America into how YOU think it should be.

I wouldn't trust anyone who votes otherwise.

And that is why this concept is lunacy.

No kidding. Democracy isn't perfect, but this is insane. "Public workers vote for their own good, but they should vote for the collective good." But who determines the collective good?

According to this guy, the right wing. So in other words, since they don't vote the way conservatives want them to vote, public workers shouldn't be allowed to vote at all. What's next? Disenfranchising union members? Jews? Blacks? Because by and large, they don't vote for the "common good" either.

Well, consider the source - one could cast the cynical opinion that if teachers unions and public-sector workers were traditionally GOP stalwarts as opposed to favoring Dems, the National Review might laud them on their patriotism.

Heh - and then there's this:
Quote:
The state government spent our money like drunken sailors during the boom years of the 1990s, establishing huge new entitlements and fixed costs. Now that lean times have arrived, none of this can be afforded, and my state is looking at a deficit of $11.5 billion on a $40 billion budget.

The remarkably creative solution offered by the state legislature is to raise spending
Now, I didn't do any research on Derbyshire, but I'll bet he's 100% behind the Bush tax cuts. Go figure.
