White House shelved deficit report

From <a href="http://www.msnbc.com/news/919446.asp?0cv=CB10" target="_blank">this</a> article on MSNBC:

Quote:
WASHINGTON, May 29 — The Bush administration has shelved a report commissioned by the Treasury that shows the U.S. currently faces a future of chronic federal budget deficits totaling at least $44 trillion in current U.S. dollars.

THE STUDY, the most comprehensive assessment of how the U.S. government is at risk of being overwhelmed by the “baby boom” generation’s future healthcare and retirement costs, was commissioned by then-Treasury secretary Paul O’Neill.

But the Bush administration chose to keep the findings out of the annual budget report for fiscal year 2004, published in February, as the White House campaigned for a tax-cut package that critics claim will expand future deficits.
So we have a deficit that's spiraling out of control, we've invaded a sovereign nation under blatantly false pretenses while killing thousands of civilians, unemployment is rampant and the Patriot Act has opened the doors for an unheard-of level of domestic spying.

God bless America.

Ah...relax. The new Jobs/Tax Relief/Kitchen Sink act will solve everything. Really....

The problem with this article is that it does not say anything about how they made the assumptions that led to the $44 trillion deficit. Is that assuming that taxes don't go up (i.e., the economy is still not doing very well in the future), while Congress will increase spending at 5+% a year?

These numbers mean absolutely nothing unless they reveal the math behind them.

Yea I was going to point that out but I am trying to find a source that says that. I suppose if this begins to make some kind of ruckus it will be better identified. But not even the usual blogs really mention anything so I think at this point it is a reaching non issue to them.. Could be wrong about their mindset though.

I just find it interesting how the Libs and Conservos completely flip-flopped when Clinton left office and Bush came in.

Now, those who were on the Clinton witch hunts defend Bush 'til the end... and those who backed Clinton now find evil in everything that Bush does.

Human behavior... interesting, yet predictable.

Huh? What does that have to do with this deception?

The point is... the Clinton administration took part in the same types of deceptions all the time. Only then, we would have likely seen someone like CTDelude create this thread instead of Jacob because of political slant.

Not at all making light of the issue at hand and its legitimacy or trying to change the subject. Just making an observation. Each "side" is much more like than they would ever care to admit.

I don't understand your point. You're more likely to notice the mistakes/deceptions of those you support than those you do not...Shouldn't that be taken for granted on ANY issue regarding ANY group?

Perhaps. But that would be walking a fine line to complete hypocrisy.

Anyway, didn't mean to get off on that as a tangent. Again, just making an observation.

Back on topic... does anyone dare venture to guess where our Deficit and National Debt will be in about 2-3 more years?

Actually I have been thinking about posting some flaws of the current Administration. Camp X-Ray is a good example of something gone overboard. There are some other issues I have taken with this Administration especially dealing with not supporting the judges they have picked during their review by Congress.

It seems the White House wants more to lead its own party with the majority they have to get things through that they want rather than being actual leaders to lead both sides. As much as partisanship remains apart of politics no matter what the White House under either political ideaology should try and lead both parties to what is good for the American people. But if they feel strongly enough to stick to their guns about something than they have my vote of confidence.

As for the economy....well it still has been growing even after 9/11 and two wars which is an incredible thing. In two or three years I believe our economy will have recovered nicely.

That is unless China takes the movie Hero to heart and than we will be facing the Red Army quite soon.
