ALL THE WAY TO HEAVEN, the new Darker track

This is going to be the last song on my next - and LONG overdue record - The Demon-Haunted World. It's an instrumental, and I don't want to say much more about it than that.

I've finally kind of gotten back in the groove, and I'm going to do my best to finish the record by March 2, my birthday.

My AMPCAST page has this song, and all of the songs already recorded for this new record and all of the songs from my last record.

Click away and enjoy.

I appreciate it. WHat do you think of the song?

Virgin ears, Mikah. The only way to go. I have no speakers hooked up at this time. Surprise me! I trust you on this.

(edited because I can't spell today either)

Nice and mellow. A little long, but good mood music.

Thanks, mein Nunz.

The length is an interesting point because normally I am short-attention span Joe when it comes to music. But the music that inspired me to do stuff in this vein - Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek's score for One Hour Photo and Thomas Newman's score from Road to Perdition - tended to use really interesting 1-2 minute bits I thought were TOO short. I'd just keep replaying "Bit Borrowers" (RTP) or "Agfa Montage" (OHP) over and over, and I thought if I was going to do something score-esque, I'd save myself the trouble of repeat plays.

And because of the languid, airy nature of the music, I figured it was kind of like a meal that needed time to simmer slowly, with different bits dropping in and out of the mix all the while.

Anyway...thanks for responding and glad you liked it.

Mikah, I don't know if you realize it yet, but I'm willing to bet that I'm your biggest fan north of the boarder. I think I told you this before, but I absolutely love your music. Probably my favorite track so far is BEAUTIFUL PICTURES. I've plugged your tracks to many of my friends, and naturally got mixed reviews, but you generally offer enough diversity in your sound to appeal to most people. Anyways, I really dig this track, some really solid recording on the guitar, and the ambient piano in the background sounds nice too. I always loved reverb muffled piano, it just sounds so haunting. Plus the synth work is pretty tight as well, that subtle whining guitar in the back adds alot the mood, and sounds great with headphones. Good stuff brother, keep it up, I'll download more.
Thank you so very much. There'll be 5 more songs on this record, and I'll put up 2 more before it's completed, with the other 3 saved for when you buy the record.

Honestly, I don't like this song. I LOVE it. It seems GOOD instrumental pieces are always too short, this one is just right.

I suck at using technical jargon like the Goblin Boy up there, so I'll say that the piano melody is great and the contrasting guitar part makes a great complement.

Top notch work, big shooter.

And as a personal aside (ignore if you like), this track really reminds me of the days when my girlfriend (now wife) and I would relax at night and look out her dorm room window onto the city lights with a cool breeze blowing through the room.

You sneaky bastard. I'd almost given up hope that you were EVER going to release another track. This one was worth the wait, by far my favorite out of the Demon Haunted World tracks. Great combination of sounds, its got a tight little drum beat, some eastern flavored guitar work, and that quiet, haunting piano. Mixes together beautifully. Too many other cool touches for me to mention. Nicely done, sir.

I REALLY like this one Micah. Are you sure it couldn't use some lyrix though? I came up with a whole bunch of melodic ideas while listening. Awesome. I love how the beat (awesome beat) and the guitar riff just snake around each other. The piano stuff is great too, it reminds me of Mark Snow's X-Files stuff. This would be a great driving tune. It seems like your recording setup has improved too. All of the sounds are much clearer and blend very well. Good job.

Thanks, HMT. I considered putting vocals to it, but nothing came to me that didn't seem extraneous and gratuitous. In the end, I think it worked out best, tho I may tweak the length and/or structure a smidgen before it hits the final CD.

Forklift/Pariah - Thanks for the kind words, and even more importantly, for simply listening. It's ALWAYS appreciated.

I've been letting this one sink in for a bit before commenting. I'm no musician, but I get the impression that purely instrumental pieces might actually be harder to create than a normal song. At least then you've got the lyrics to give it structure and meaning. Instrumental means you have to be more...abstract? Getting sounds to convey a mood, rather than words.

It reminds me a lot of "Protection" by Massive Attack, an album that was on almost continuous loop during my final year at college, the soundtrack to many fuzzy Sunday mornings. I don't mean it reminds me in a derivative way, just that it's almost what I'd call classical hip-hop. Strong beats, but with intelligence and mood behind it.

The track loops round quite nicely as well if you leave it on repeat. In fact, I'd like to hear an entire album of stuff like this - not just as the last track on an eclectic album.

And, finally, love the album title. It's Carl Sagan, isn't it?

Most certainly. Love that book.

Interestingly enough, there WILL be an album of stuff like this. After I finish this record, I don't want to do another "Darker" album for a good little while. Even with the current eclecticness of it, I feel there are a lot of sounds that just wouldn't feel quite right on a Darker album. So the next album will be all instrumental, use a lot of loops, and be very ambient. That's the first type of music I really started making on my own, and I want to get back to it.

You can hear my early experiments with this stuff by going to MP3.com and doing a search under my name here, Mikah912.

That stuff is golden. A whole album like that would be very cool.

Very cool track. Sounds like it would fit snuggly into a film score.

Please forgive my late reply Micah. I been real busy this week. I love this music.

The songs I can't get out of my head:
All the Way to Heaven
Beautiful Pictures
Egyptian Tapestry

Great stuff Micah. I will buy this album when it drops.

Micah, your songs are really wonderful

Drift of Pigs has a certain U2 / David Bowie vibe in it...

Good stuff, Mr. Robinson! Terrific mood music.

By the way, this also helped me when putting Donovan down to sleep. (That's a GOOD thing).

Thanks so much for the healthy response, guys.

Looks like the album will take even a wee bit longer than I thought because I'm going to be out of town on business for a good bit shortly.

When I get back in March, tho, it's full steam ahead for this record.

Micah, I just listened to the track. LOVED IT! I agree with the comments about looping the track for a nice 'background' sound. I am happy to hear you will be working on an instrumental project next. Keep us informed as to release dates. Thanks!

No..I'm kidding. Thanks very much for the feedback. If you really can tolerate my singing, I'd advise you to check out the rest of my songs. There's more instrumental stuff there, along with an incredibly diverse selection of stuff.

HEHE, I was a "Darker" virgin up until now. I'm heading back now to check out the other tunes. I'll let you know if my ears bleed! wink

uh...Micah...YOU ROCK! You have incredible range both vocally and in musical styles. I really like the variety. Like Nick, (and I hope you don't mind the comparison, because I really like his vocals too,) I like your extremes the best. The haunting whispers and the searing screams are my favorites. I definitely look forward to hearing more.

Nowhere near. I've had some hard drive problems lately that set me back a bit. Not too big a deal to re-record, but it'll take time.

In the meantime, I'm working on another non-Darker, non-PKG project, and I'll post some material from that up sometime in early July.
