THE TRAVELLING SONG - the new old tune from Sacrament

We wrote this song as a "throwaway" tune. We were sitting around rehearsal one day (2 or 3 years ago), and we said, "Hey, we should probably have a mellower song. NOt that we want one, but people dig 'em, and it will make our set more well rounded." So it was basically an obligatory thing.

Originally the whole song was just the 3 chorus chords. BUt we got really sick of that and so I (Kirk) came up with the verse progression with kind of a jazz/gospel sort of feel. We liked it a bunch, and of course, the one song that we didn't really want to write is the one that just about EVERYBODY loves. Even one of our professors at school who is a die-hard classical music performer, claimed that the melody "haunted" him.

Get out your lighters, kids, it's power ballad time.
(It really is a hard rocking song, I'm just telling the real story. It really did start out as a joke almost. Now it's one of our best.)

Ok, about this particular recording. It's live, and you can't hear the guitar well. In the middle, there's a drop in volume for some reason, but otherwise it's fairly high qulaity.

Yes, I tried as hard as I could to hit the verse harmonies. Wudn't happenin'.

That said, take a trip with the Travelling Song!

Lyrics:

Every day, ", a million miles away from
Yesterday, ", and still I drive on
Road is black, Sky is grey and I don't know if I can
Find my way, ", without this travelling song

Every day, ", I go on in this way
But I always say, always say, never say "die"
Here and there and everywhere I turn, I find
A new day, ", so onward I fly.

If I could fly on wings of Freedom
Wings of Freedom, yeah
I would tell the whole world
All about Freedom.

One day, ", after I have gone away
You will find, ", someone singing this song
Until that day, ", when I die
I will, ", reach for the sky

Everyone, ", will pass on one day
Keepin on, ", the road is so long.
On your way, ", remember the words I say
Singin this, ", travelling song.

I like the SONG, but I want to hear a studio version as the vocals and drums are front and center with the guitar and bass a little hidden.

Knowing it's a live track helps... but it sounds like something that could be a real "flick your lighter" type song.

I really like the guitar work, Kirk.

Thanks for the guitar compliment. I'm glad you like the song. Everyone at the shows and those who listen to this track say they love it.

We'd like to have studio versions of our stuff too, but that's hard for us because of money. We're always working on getting something together, but playing out is our focus right now.

Very good soloing, HMT.

The song....wasn't really my cup of tea. It wasn't bad, mind you, but it seemed a little blatantly anthemic and I just felt a bit underwhelmed.

You guys really should look into recording some of this stuff. No one says you must go to a studio, tho. Complete ProTools packages go for $400 these days, and they'll run on pretty much any old PC (since they come with dedicated hardware).

Barring that, you could get a SoundBlaster soundcard and pick up a copy of Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 for around for sub-$200 for the whole shebang.

And it'll pay for itself because you can sell your stuff at shows, and it'll help you play bigger and better-paying gigs too, as well as helping the RIGHT people to notice you.

Blatantly anthemic...hehe...you're right of course. Well, at least the anthemic part. It wasn't blatant. We just wrote the song. I wrote the chorus, and Scott and I each wrote 2 verses. People really do love this song though, whatever it may be.

I'm glad you liked the soloing, Micah, thanks. I finally got some shredding for you to listen to. wink

Just to clarify about the "blatantly anthemic" comment, this song was written WAAAAAY before 9/11/01. Just so you're not thinking we wrote this in a spew of mad patriotism. I guess I'm just saying we didn't set out to write an anthem. It really did turn out that way, though, because people go wild for this song. Sorry it wasn't your type o tune though. It wasn't ours when we wrote it either, but we're kind of partial to it now.

My excellent friend recently purchased the ProTools MBox software/hardware package, and he's offered to record us, so perhaps soon we will have some studio tracks available. We would love to sell music at our shows, but I'm perhaps a little overly concerned about selling something less than average quality. And that's all we have right now. But as I said, I'm always trying to get something going, so perhaps my friend's new home recording setup will yield us some good recordings that I/we can feel good about selling.

HMT, I hope I didn't insult you with the "blatantly anthemic" comment. 'Twas not my intent. I didn't even think about 9/11, actually. It just seemed very....dunno.....kind of obvious.

I guess I'm more into "cryptic," artier lyrics. Hence my verbose rantings and lengthy song titles on my own recordings.

Naw, I wasn't offended. I laughed. I thought your honesty was pretty rad. I mean, having the origins that the song has, I can look at it objectively and it IS pretty much a straightforward arena rock-type anthem.
We usually go for the same kind of lyrics and song titles as you do. Like I said, we wrote this one initially because we thought the audience might need something kind of accessible. When you hold this one up against our other songs, it's pretty different for us. So you're comments are right on the mark as far as I'm concerned. Besides, like you, I've learned not to take what people say about our music personally. On top of all that, I respect your input anyway, because I know that you are a talented and knowledgeable musician and music listener. So no worries.

I was just told that this song is destined to be one of the greatest of all time.

My mom told me, of course.
