THE ROYALE, the new tune from Darker

This is pretty unlike anything I've ever done. I started off trying to do a honest-to-goodness sunny Brian Wilson-type tune, but it just turned...weird.

The end result is like a combination of The Beach Boys, Van Dyke Parks, Abbey Road, and a touch of Mr. Bungle, circa California.

Kind of.

Another great song, I really love it. It sounds quite different to your prior works ... and it works.
Would describe the song with the words "haunting", "slightly depressive", "blues-y" and "dramatic melancholic".
I have this weird image of a man in my head, a man who takes his weapons and is about to meet his fate, his sure death, but he accepts his destiny and while a tear passes his cheek, he stands up and leaves to fight a final fight.

I meant to comment last night but bad weather.

This is a good track. Vocals and lyrics were good. The song gave off a haunting vibe around the beginning and middle portions of the song.

I let some friends listen to this track as well and they liked it but they thought the mood of the song was very depressing.

But still its a good track that will get better and better on repeat listens. A gem.

Thanks so much, guys. I hope to hear more from others, but these responses alone are incredibly encouraging. I think I've finally settled on how I want to do the remaining 4-5 songs for this long overdue second record, so I look forward to knocking them out and finishing this puppy soon.

Definitely a lot of even more different sounding tracks are on the way.

Weird stuff. Alot like Smile-era Beach Boys, but...I dunno, more somber. Trippy. I like it. How did you go about making that? I'm guessing some of those harmonies are synthetic voices?

First off...thanks for the feedback. But what made you think the voices were synthetic?

Oh, sorry if they weren't. The way they modulate at the beginning sounded like something that would have been done on a synthesizer.

Not exactly. But I did use some chorusing and doubling effects to smooth them out slightly unnaturally. The more choir-like and dreary, the better.

Nice. The vocal harmonies you get on this are great. The song has a very interesting texture, with the snare drum playing a kind of battle march which contrasts with the spooky Beach Boys style slow strings and droning organ. I really like the slow build up with the snare right before the cymbal crash.

All percussion and strings, no guitar? I'm shocked.

Really cool track, but definitely more eerie than sunny.

Symphonic Rufus Wainwright.

A good thing.
