What does it mean to be Protestant?

I've never been a religious person, but whenever I fill out something that asks what my religion is, my mom told me when I was a kid to mark Protestant. I've never really given it much thought until now. And it's sort of piqued my interest.

It means you belong to a subset of Christianity that protested against Catholic doctrine during the Reformation. Started by guys like Luthe rand Calvin. Is that what you're looking for?

As Homer Simpson would say, "could you dumb it down a little?"

OK. About 5 or 600 years ago a cat named Martin Luther didn't like the way that the Catholic Church was running things religiously. THey were the only gig in town as far as Christianity is concerned (unless you count the Greek Orthodox and I'm not sure when they fractured off). He objected and based on his objections the Lutheran Church was formed. The Methodist Church was formed about the same time by Wesley for similar reasons. As was the Presbyterians by John Calvin. All other Christian denominations that sprung from/splintered off of these churches are called Protestant because they protested. If you ain't a Catholic you can consider yourself a Protestant. Dig?

"Catholic Light" is what I've heard several Protestants refer to themselves as.

And then there's Church of England....

"Cake...or DEATH?"

It means you can run amok in the UK, Nortern Ireland and the U.S. Southern bible belt.

And run amok would mean what?

I'm sure CC meant no offense. You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a Prot, that's all.

As far as i'm concerned, i'm Protestant on paper only. I am not religious in the least. Maybe from now on I should write Jedi on that line that says "Other"________.
