Someone on FatWallet.com that claims to be a manager at Gamestop has reported that sometime after E3, the X-Box and PS2 will be dropping to $149, and the Gamecube will drop to $99.

Any of you game store employees hear anything about this?

Random drops, or pre-stage sales before the new consoles come out?

Probably the former.

Since the new X-box and PS consoles are supposed to come out in 2006 and the Nintendo in 2005, I would say a random drop.

I hope this is true. I would imagine this drop would be for people like me - sales must be getting stagnant as all the hardcore gamers have bought consoles by now. But I'm a casual game player, so I won't pay more than maybe 150 for one.

I don't know if those price drops are true or not but you can get a great X-box package deal from EB right now. For $300 you get the console, two controllers and I think four games. I almost broke down and bought one yesterday.

Dumb fact of the day:

In the U.K., due to price drops, you can now buy a brand new GameCube for less than a brand new Gameboy SP. Ummm, why?

Because unlike home consoles, Nintendo has a virtual monopoly on the handheld gaming industry.

Yes, the price-drops are true. We just got the marketing in for it yesterday.

So the price drops happen sometime after E3? Oh please let it be around May 30th (my birthday)...

In any case...must try to...save cash...to buy X-Box and Halo...

Just the man I was waiting to hear from. Thanks for the confirmation, Verbs.

My guess is they'll announce the price drops with much fanfare at E3 and they'll take into effect that same day.

Fantastic news. I probably buy the X-Box and GC within the next two months.

Also, guys, beginning tomorrow I believe, if you buy a Gamecube you get a free copy of The Wind Waker with it. Don't know if that's for all over the country, but it should be.

Will this still be in effect when GC drops to $99?

I would assume so, since I expect the deal would last for a good month. Hell, the "Buy a GC, choose from 4 games" deal went on for longer than that.

I'll see if I can find out tonight.

Thanks.

Shit. And of course this happens after I finally buy an XBox off eBay to avoid the $199 price. Oh well.
I don't understand either. I just read at various sites with E3 news saying that both MS and Nintendo announced that their prices will not change.

What's up with this verbs?
I'll have to ask someone about this, I haven't heard a thing. If it's true, it's BS because that means PS2 is still changing and MS and CERTAINLY not Nintendo aren't gonna let that happen and not have their prices drop too.
OK, PS2 and Xbox just announced a drop to $179. No word still from Nintendo though.
I don't think Nintendo's gonna drop the price of the Gamecube. I think that in the next few months they might try some bundle deal with GameBoy Advance. But that's just a theory.
Nintendo is bundling a demo disc now, in addition to the free game, and in June will bundle the Game Boy Player for free as well.

What's the Game Boy "Player"?
I understand it to be a new gimmick for playing GBA games through your TV. Kinda like a Super Game Boy for the Gamecube.
That's kind cool when you consider the ports of SNES games on the GBA.

There is a place in the Millennium Mall here in Orlando that's selling the Xbox and PS2 for $150 (each), each with 3 or 4 games. Plus, the GC is going for $120 with some other accessories.

It's a temporary sale, but still, those are great deals.

I just bought another PS2 for when I go away to college in the fall. Best Buy has them for 179 now.

That is probably for a Refurb'd unit. Since there is literally no mark-up on consoles they would be losing a ton of money on them.

You know, the Version 2 PS2s are coming out now... they have the network adapter and a quieter DVD-ROM drive (which is progressive scan now, I believe), and I think they have a built-in IR port, too. Those are still going to be $200. I saw a link to them being on sale already at buy.com, I think.

Do it, because not only is that game good (a true sleeper hit) but the sequel (coming out the end of August) is supposed to be awesome.

Not that it means anything to me since I never watched the show, but you might be interested in this about the sequel:

" Created as a "lost episode" from the TV show, specifically in season five between shows 17-18 (for you super Buffy fans, that means Buffy's mom has died, Dawn is at camp and Faith has just gotten out of jail), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds commences as the new comic book ends. In the beginning, Buffy must search out the location of Anya and Tara, who have been kidnapped and bound in the lower regions of a Magic shop."
