Way Of The Samurai (PS2)

Anybody else played this? I've just got it and although it's clunky and rough around the edges, it's very addictive and has a really cool, authentic samurai feel.

I'm interested in it, since it comes from the developpers of Tenchu 1 and 2 (two games that I love with all my heart) but I've read that the game was fairly short, although quite replayable. Let us know how it is as you progress, but I have a feeling I'll just wait for Onimusha 2 for some good samurai slicing action.

isn't there something really funky about the save system? I read somewhere that the save you use to restart the game gets deleted or something? that sounds truly horrible... I dig the graphics and idea behind the game, but I gotta have me a good save system....

It's a very different game to Onimusha 2 (which is fantastic). Onimusha is very much an action game. Way Of The Samurai has more formal fighting system, and a lot more emphasis on interacting with people.

I thought there must be a Tenchu connection, as it shares the same ups and downs as those games. I don't know about the length of the game, but I'd say it's very replayable. I had a go at work this afternoon, but didn't have a memory card so I started again at home. There's a very noticable difference when you play it and make different decisions. I also like the way that it's about more than just fighting - you have to act like a noble samurai at all times.

Not a great game (the graphics are pretty glitchy - like Tenchu) but it's a bit quirky and gives you plenty of freedom to choose your own path through the game. And I like stuff like that.

Worth a rental, definitely.

I rented this game a month ago and played it pretty much straight for the 6 days I had it. It's just so damn addictive, each p[lay through is about 2 hours long if you do the whole game and after that you can replay it tons of times. I loved the game but I wouldn't buy it.

It's a very good game, but it is way too short. It's replayable as hell, but when I beat the game it always left me unsatisfied. The game has great ideas and is very well made, so I'm hoping that these guys put this kind of effort (more refined, of course) into Tenchu 3.

I've only saved once and haven't continued my game yet, but there is a weird thing where to save the game, you have to quit. You can only save when you leave an area, and you can't just save and carry on playing. If you want to continue you have to reload your save.

I think it might be to stop people doing quick-saves and reloading their game if they die. Brutal, but it makes sense given the games emphasis on cause and effect, and the consequences of your actions. Very in keeping with the Samurai code. This way, you can't go back and try a different approach if you fuck up - you've got to deal with the hand you've dealt. A bit like Nick removing the edit feature. wink

Quite a cool idea, now I think about it, and if the game is quite short then it's no great hardship. Not sure I'd like to see it implemented on a longer game though.
