Time Splitters 2

It is about time the PS2 had a really good FPS. While TS1, Red Faction, the 007 games & Turok all ranged from, eh, to that was pretty fun, TS2 is actually a really fun FPS. I have only played through the first level, Siberia which was the demo, and part of Chicago, but they are big, the framerate is great, the game looks great, this is the Goldeneye sequal that TS1 should have been.

There are a whole ass load of games, single and multi-player, outside of the main game as well.

You can kill monkeys.

More after five when I get home from work.
is it out for xbox right now, too?
I played through a bit of the demo for X-Box and was underwhelmed. Maybe some key instruction was bumped out, but I found the objectives to be too vaguely defined. I had some control issues as well.

I thought the PS2 & Box versions both hit stores today and next week for Cube but I was chatting with the EB guy while he was unloading the shipment and it didn't look like anything but the PS2 had arrived.

Yeah but I'm comparing this to Goldeneye and that game had some vague objectives as well, I don't mind this so much in a FPS shooter because ultimatley you are just trying to kill everything anyway. As far as control goes, I think the PS2 control is great, a little floaty, but not in a bad way. I can't comment on the Box control though.

Some great levels in this game, helping the hunchback save large breasted women in Notre Dame was quite fun.

How do you feel about the single player experience in this one? Does it have a decent story this time through ? Also...does it seem short on the single player side ?

I'm pretty sure the multiplayer should be great...but just had questions on the single player modes. Does it feel as lengthy as Perfect Dark and Goldeneye ?
C'mon Otis...gimme some more info on the story mode and level lengths....

Anybody else playing this one....it sounds like the multiplayer mode should be sweet...could be a good switch up player for the Atl Halo fests.

I'm playing the multi-player as we speak. It is amazing, the different amount of games is huge. Just finished playing a game where every time you get killed you get progressivly smaller but stronger. The single player seems a bit short at first, but that is because you have to beat each level on easy first. Going back and playing on normal is a large step up in dificulty and level length. Just to take the first level as an example, on easy you don't see almost half the mission. In Chicago, there is a new building that opens up in normal that sets up a slick little sniper battle. There enough here to keep you going for a long time. I think there are like a hundred and fifty unlockable characters. I have not even messed with the level editor yet.
This game fucking rocks. Possibly my game of the year (if you ignore Vice City).
I've gotta wait until next week to pick up the Gamecube version. I wasn't a big fan of the first Timesplitters, but the constant comparisons to Goldeneye and the glut of multiplayer options and a level editor sold me. Hopefully, this game will make up for The Turok Incident of 2002.

At this point, because there are a whole lot of good looking titles on the horizon, I totaly agree.

Dan - what system are you playing it on? And, does anyone know if the XBOX version was released?
Kev Matchstick....the X-box version doesn't drop till 10/22 last I saw at EB games site. It got pushed back....but I rented the PS2 version from Blockbuster today to try it out. The fellas in here are right...this game ROCKS !!!!

There are so many modes and characters and weapons and it's just a lot of fun. The story mode is more rounded out too. The X-box version will support LAN play too so playing it should easily augment and maybe even surpass our ATL Halo fests !!!! It will be nice to have a title to switch up with Halo and I think this one's deathmatch modes will fit the bill nicely.
Thanks, JankStar. Of course 'Time Splitters 2' replacing HALO in the Atlanta slugfests depends upon one thing and one thing only: how many spaces you get for creating your character's name.

For name creation, if I remember right, you get enough room to get pretty creative.

Played the demo (PS2) again today and went ahead and paid for the Xbox version.

OK Justin, Nick, Kelvin, Micah and anyone else with an Xbox, you guys gotta get this so we can get our multiplayer fun on.
D-nice,

Is it out for old XBOX yet? Or is Kelvin right about next week.
Much as I hate to admit it, he's right(but it's not next week, it's the 23rd).

Anyone have any news on differences in versions, I have the PS2 version obviously but might trade for the Cube copy if it has anything better to offer. The EB 14 day game trial is a wonderful thing.

Gamecube has better graphics, PS2 has system link. If you know you'll be hosting massive Timesplitter marathons, then keep the PS2 version.

I prefer the GC controller and my living room isn't big enough to cram 8-16 players, so Gamecube for me.
Went to BestBuy tonight after deciding whether to buy the GameCube or PS2 versions. I decided GameCube cause of the controller. Plus, I don't have a MultiTap for the PS2. The Cube has those wonderful 4 spots. However, they hadn't received their copies yet, but the PS2 version was there. Still didn't buy. I got Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 instead for the PS2. That means I'll be getting TS2 in the next few days. Then I'll get Animal Crossing, Battlefield 1942 and Kingdom Hearts. Damn me having no money.

10/22 can't get here quick enough to pick up the X-Box version of this game. I'm still playing through it on my PS2 rented copy. Literally every time I play it I unlock new characters and new levels (which I will have to do all over again when I get the X-box version but it's so much fun I don't mind).

This thing has replay that will last for months on end. It's even fun playing the multiplayer sections with bots cause they react just like humans and you can adjust their intelligence. Heck you can adjust EVERYTHING in this thing. Level optimization is on the level of Perfect Dark's detailed level options.

The one thing that some people had an issue with in the demo - the flex movement of the aiming cursor when aiming - becomes second nature. In fact, I dug out my copy of Goldeneye and played through a couple of levels and ya know what - it controlled the exact same way when aiming. It'll come back to you like second nature if you loved Goldeneye. This game really does have that Goldeneye feel too...just incredible !!!

Can't wait till we rotate this in on the ATL Halo fests !! There's a multiplayer level called Ice Station that will bring to mind the Sidewinder multiplayer level in Halo except now there are huge turrets you can control on the bases in it. INCREDIBLY COOL !!!
I was just watching some gameplay movies of this on IGN for the X-Box version and it looks incredible! The in-game music is amazing. And the gameplay looks fun...almost reminds me of Goldeneye.

I oughta try this one out....
Dennis,

I wouldn't mind. Let's try it out first (your copy), tho, with everyone around, and then if it passes group muster, we can start going out and getting copies.

It is easily the best console multi-player FPS on the market Micah. I think Halo still has the straight single player story mode down but TS2 just can't be beat for insane multi-player levels and options.

I usually don't care for the level editors to much, but I built one of the old Goldeneye levels last night and it worked out better than I thought.
Mikah...

Don't just take my word for it...listen to Otis...you won't find a game with more multiplayer options and modes and downright fun than TS2. Plus...it will be nice to put everyone on an even starting ground in multiplayer since you Halo veterans have been at it in Halo for months and months and know where every sniping point and every power up and weapon re-spawns on every map...ha ha ha. Couldn't resist. Seriously...it's good though. Go to IGN and read the X-Box review...it's up for free for everyone now. Not just insiders. They went so far as to say it's better than both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark !!

Does anyone else find themselves picking up Goldeneye once in awhile with a few friends and just going at it? I unfortunally do not have fast computer, so my PS2, Genesis, GBA, and Nintendo 64 are all I've got when it comes to deathmatch.

Yeah, until I got TS2. Goldeneye doesn't have a mini-gun.

We played a little of the PS2 version of this last night, and I think it's safe to say that it passes group muster.

I'm not going to say it's the best console multi-player FPS quite yet because:

1) It's a lot faster, and therefore a little less realistic, than Halo.
2) The HUD is wee bit cluttered especially when compared to Halo.
3) No vehicles.

But it still looks like a blast and I think we're going to get several copies of the Xbox version and put it through its paces.

As for the Halo stuff...don't let the fact that Nick, Steve, and I have played it for months fool you. It's all about your performance THAT DAY and how well your team works together. And those things are available to any player with any level of experience on any day. Knowing the maps doesn't mean you know WHERE TO FIND people on those very same maps, and unless you can do that without them killing you first, the experience and knowledge is useless.

Also, there's no such thing as a "sniping point." Any real sniper must be able to deal death from any location on the map against any person or any vehicle, usually while on the move. You can stand still and camp if you like, but your team will probably lose.

Lastly, don't forget that Dennis has played it longer than any of us.
I hear ya Mikah...Halo is really one of those games where sometimes a person will have a good game and sometimes not...I think I mostly perform better in the close fast levels like Prisoner though rather than the more slower paced Blood Gulch.

Glad you guys were able to put TS2 through the paces and it passed the 'council'. Can't wait to get my hands on the X-Box version too as my PS2 rental is due back today. The X-Box version ships today so EB should have them tomorrow for sure.

Free Radical (developers of TimeSplitters 2) are made up of ex-Rare staff who worked on GoldenEye - hence how fucking great this game is.

It's the first console FPS I've played where I felt in control right from the start, and never felt like I was fighting the joypad. And the level design, mission objectives and general mood of the game are all spot-on.

Still loving it.

Picking up my GC version today. Work has been punishment the last few weeks, so I'm looking forward to dealing out some of my own.

I just played through a fun little round, the only weapons are rocket launchers and it is basically just kill all the other people. Every 30 seconds or so though you here a trumpet sound and a group of about 10 or 15 monkeys will all charge out from one of the doors each carrying there own rocket launcher. You just see this red blob up on the radar as they all stay huddled together and swarm you. Great fun.

X-Box version dropped today...picked it up...it rocks as well !!!! Now to start unlocking things !!!

I built the Bunker from Goldeneye off some specs from gamefaqs. I just popped over there a minute ago and all sorts of Goldeneye level designs are being posted now.
This game is pretty good but it feels too "light"......the levels are smaller than all get out and just not interesting enough. Really sort of dull....

Maybe it'll get better, and I was playing against some bots so the multiplayer does seem fun...

But other than that, nothing to write home about...

When can we expect a Godzilla review?

Working on it. I think it's due in the UK in the next few weeks, but it's definitely on my list. The Infogrames/Atari PR guy knows I want it, and he's a generous soul.
Great article, Dan. You really nailed what makes this game tick. I'm hooked.

By the way, otis, thanks for the direction to gamefaqs. The glut of options on the mapmaker left me a little bewildered. Cribbing Goldeneye levels is a good place to start.
This...game...kicks...ass.

Thank you.

BTW, it keeps the Statistics of your player just like in Perfect Dark. Love, I tell you.

I want to build all of the levels from PD and GE. Tell me which ones from GameFAQs work well.

Great article Dan!

The Notre Dame level KICKED ASS. Other than that, so far it's no better than any other FPS i've ever played....
Nice review, Dan! I think I'll give that demo another shot this afternoon to find what you crazy guys think is so great about this game.

You playing on easy Verbal? The story mode opens up more on medium and hard. Go play some of the arcade levels, those things are addictive as hell. You also get to see some of the weapons you have to look forward to.

You didn't like the Dam or Chicago? I thought both were great for anyone who likes to snipe.
Chicago was cool but I haven't tried it in multiplayer.

And the first time through the levels you can only play on Easy...right? I guess i'll have to replay them on higher difficulties.
Thread Starter
Yeah you can only play easy the first time through. Trust me though, go back and play in medium. The Dam level is twice as long with a boss like battle at the end. Chicago has a whole new building open to you with a sniper fight and some other new things. You can't just run & gun like you can on easy you really need to conserve ammo and plan your attacks after the first few levels.
