Francis Ford Coppola: Has he lost it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone think Francis Ford Coppola is still capable of making great films because his most recent output is not exactly up there with the movies he was making in the 70's. Can anyone name the last great film Coppola made and pinpoint when his slide began.

Two words.

Nicolas Cage...

He did do 'The Rainmaker' which was rather well received, he managed to make Mickey Rourke look good, i think that's saying something.

I agree that the Rainmaker, while not up to the standard of his best work, was a great accomplishment for him.

Jesus Christ, how can you people get this far without mentioning Apocalypse Now?

The next movie he's directing, Megalopolis, is one that he's been working on for decades. If he can ever turn out another script and get working on it (or has he already? I haven't heard anything about this movie in a while) it looks to be great.

I think Tucker is a massively overrated work, though I doubt I would call it a great work, and I'd say the same for Bram Stoker's Dracula.

However, for FFC to make something great, to even attempt it, it has to come from something that truly connects from within. I think you're right on Megalopolis - this is a dream project of his, and I think it'll show whether he's still truly an auteur.

To answer your question, the script was pretty close to done - to the point that casting possibilities were starting to surface - and then 9/11 hit, which necessitated changes to his plot, which is set in a version of contemporary NYC. Here's hoping he gets it right.

Plus, I thought it was one of the better Grisham movies.

Great cast in that one!

Randy Travis as the ousted member of the jury was comic gold!

why the hell not?

it has the chance to be a great movie.

The man has lost it. Maybe I'll be pleasantly suprised and I will happily admit I was wrong about On The Road, but I doubt that will happen. Coppola was behind some of the greatest works of American cinema and while you can say that The Rainmaker or Dracula were good films, this man did work that few films since have matched. His brilliance is far from what it once was.

Oh, and Jack is a huge negator.

I love the book and don't think it will translate very well into film form. I love Coppola, but I don't know if he has it in him anymore to make this adaption great or even marginally good.

Just my opinion.

You say he has lost it but the only sucktacular film you can mention is SuperNova. All the other flicks may not have been Godfather caliber but not much is.

He makes a decent wine. Those of you at VIDA last week, note the second and by far the best of the four types of wine we tried, was a Coppola and it was the best wine we had that night.

How can you say bad things about a man who makes good wine? For shame, chewers! For shame!

Acrapandtotalloss Now was so bad it deserves to be mentioned in the 100 all time worst movies ever made. That said, I still think the man can make a good film. Personally, I hope he does it.

Not to crsuh you guys further, but DH says that he's only producing "On the Road", its actually being directed by.....wait for it......Joel Schumacher.

I think Coppola is just content doing other things. he always wanted to produce a lot of stuff and get to the point where he could have some control. Now he does. And besides, I read the massive biography of his life published not long ago, and the guy had a turbulent enough time in his prime to deserve some rest. "The Rainmaker" showed he still has some skills, but it wasn't a stretch.

Like many, I'm just waiting on "Megalopolis".

Okay, well with Schumacher at the helm, I have lost what little faith I had in this endeavour...

I almost let that slide. But I can't. I hate when people need to shit on movies that they KNOW many people love. ApocNow is one of mine, and many others favorite movies. Its one of the greatest greatest war movies ever made thats not about the war itself.

I could go on about how its a great movie, but for you to shit on it and call it one of the 100 worst ever? Go to hell, theres thousands of shit movies that deserve that title a helluva lot more than this.
