What Game Magazines ShouldI Look Into?

Topic says it all.

I've picked up Play and really enjoyed it so far but after being out of the gaming industry for awhile I don't know what's tops anymore.

Thanks mucho!

I don;t know about all the others, but avoid PC Gamer like the plague. You'll be glad you did. In 96 or 97, their magazines were 400 pages minimum. Now, on average, they are barely 120 pages, and 70 percent of it is ads, and the reviews are about 5 or less paragraphs. The reviews just look big becuase they put big as fuck pictures into them.

I pay $20 a year for gamespot.com complete membership and it's like a magazine, except updated everyday with video reviews and a lot more.

Before that I subscribed to NextGen and EGM. NextGen was great, really clean and had some nice reviews, but that went under and I started losing interest in EGM. But I think PLAY looks kidna nice, haven't given it a good look though.

EGM is the best. Go with that.

my favorite is the Playstation 2 magazine they've been sending me for 2 years despite me having never paid for it.

but i hear that UK mag is real good.

I read PSM (I've been getting it for free for years), Game Informer, and Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). I think EGM is the best, then Game Informer, then PSM.

Many thanks to those who stated what is good.

Heard about Game Informer and can't seem to find the thing to check it out.

Anyone know the releases schedules of the gaming magazines?

EGM... I've been an avid reader of EGM for years now and I really like it. It's good for all systems, except PC, and it's really funny, IMHO.

Game Informer is pretty good....there's also a new one called PLAY and it seems to have really well written articles....

Go with Play people. If anything I must admit this is the best looking gaming mag out there now. Stylish and includes non generic choices for ther game likes.

Heck they evern picked GunValkyrie as the best X Box game of last year. I respect that and their reasoning.

Play SUCKS. They're all gloss, focus too much on anime, and are always late covering games.

Nintendo Power is a bastion of journalistic integrity.

Actually, I do thumb through a Nintendo Power every now and then just to read the letters section. It's fucking hysterical.

"You should make a game where Link has to use a magic sword to fight a lot of ninjas and then Mario and Samus show up to help him and you should call it Nintendo Force and please send me a Game Boy because mine broke when I dropped it in the toilet."

Heh. Little kids are so fucking dumb.

I think I sent that letter in.

You've also gotta laugh at the pictures kids draw and send in.

Ah but they have recently decided to listen to the readers about what is really wanted. Changes ahead.

And hands down the best looking mag like said.

As for the anime...there isn't that much really (I think 4 reviews this month) and they aren't a gaming mag singularly so can't blame em.

As for the lateness, they've been better as of late. Though I did find a review of 2002 year a bit late but I let them off easy because of the changing of the mag.

Though I do expect greatness outta a CHUD mag if it comes about.

"Play SUCKS. They're all gloss, focus too much on anime, and are always late covering games."

Can't get anything to quote today for some reason....

Play is the best one out there. I read them all and Play continually impresses with it's design, art, and excellent developer articles. The guys at Play can write. Any other mag looks like a bunch of college dropouts compared to these guys but they've been in the biz for a long time! Too much anime? They have a couple pages a month covering the latest stuff, Devil Lady is some good horror anime, not an overwhelming amount but then I like anime so I'm biased.

PSG 24-7 is the best. It has some great writers working on it...

Nintendo Power is indeed ass. It's pretty sad that the only official Nintendo mag is so unbearably crappy, they could really use something along the lines of OPM or OXM.

I was forever put off gaming mags ever since one of them printed my "star letter" but refused to send me the £200 that they promised. Bastards.

The online gamings sites are A-OK as far as I'm concerned. Give <a href="http://www.gamespot.com" target="_blank">www.gamespot.com</a> a try.

The on-line gaming sites are horrible! You must not have heard of the IGN scandel where one of the reviewers was canned due to the fact that he wrote honest reviews. He was giving shitty reviews to shitty games and IGN was losing advertising so they dumped him. Probably the only reviewer ever worth a shit on IGN. Gamespot does the same thing. GTA:VC didn't reciever perfect scores based on the games own merits!

Who was canned? I must have forgot.

Then I forget which magazine he's with now, but that asshole Mike Salmon. He gets passed around magazines like a 5 dollar whore. Almost every magazine he's been affiliated with crashed and burned.

Well, I'm mostly into news and previews, which is where the online sites blow print mags clear out of the water. By their very nature, websites are instantly updateable and can offer you tons of multimedia content. In comparison, print mags give you the gaming equivalent of yesterday's news, with maybe a cover-mounted DVD if you're lucky. The only print mags I tend to read these days are the ones with the *really* high quality editorials.

And I have no problem with gamespot's reviews. IGN on the other hand, have always sucked IMO. Too obsessed with "babes" and wrestling and peripheral shit like that.

I stopped getting gaming magazines when Diehard Gamefan went out of business. God I miss that magazine.
The reverend was the guy canned. website media as far as gaming goes is shit! Even the news they report is biased and slanted!

Oh and PC Gamer kicks ass!!!

I only remember two things about that magazine. One, it had a big story praising Gunstar Heroes, the greatest goddamn sidescroller ever. Ever. Thank you, Diehard Gamefan. I never would have known if not for you.

Two, they had that ever-less-funny comic strip which had a few gems near the beginning, such as the introduction of the 17-bit Platypus console, which looked, appropriately enough, like a dead platypus.
