GBA - Finally gets a Light

A new Game Boy Advance called GBA-SP is launching this March in the U.S. by Nintendo...it's finally front-lit. It's like a tiny flip phone and smaller than the current GBA. It should have launced this way to start with. Here's the full story courtesy of IGN Pocket. Take the link for photos.

------------------------------------------------
January 06, 2003 - Nintendo today revealed a brand new version of the Game Boy Advance.

The unit, called the Game Boy Advance SP, will be a foldable version of the GBA that, most importantly, features a front-lit LCD screen that can be turned on and off during play. The GBA SP will be released in Japan on February 14th for 12,500 yen. The system will go on sale in the US this March 23rd, the two-year anniversary of the GBA system's Japanese release. The device will retail for $99 in the US, but it will not replace the current Game Boy Advance system.

The Game Boy Advance SP system will feature a rechargeable, replaceable battery pack that gives the GBA SP system approximately 10 hours playtime with the light on, 18 hours with the light off. The unit will be sold in two colors: Platinum and Cobalt. The unit can fully charge its battery in three hours through the AC adaptor.

The screen size and hardware are virtually identical to the current Game Boy Advance system. The unit will not have a headphone jack; Nintendo has created a special adapter for the GBA SP that plugs into the link port which enables users to plug in standard headphones. Sold seperately, of course.

Very cool. If I didn't have a GBA already, I'd probably go with this one for the lit screen. The only problem I see with it is that it is almost too small. The L and R buttons would be mighty tough for me to hit while trying to keep on the d-pad and a/b buttons. Not to mention the cramping from keeping my thumbs arched on the buttons. Gah.
It should be noted that this is the coolest looking thing to ever come out of Nintendo's R&D.

It's also availiable in Black and Indigo.

Also, screens of Advance Wars 2:

(Sorry if this post has too many pictures.)

What..the...heck?

I echo the 'too small' comment. Damnit, I like my widescreen/widebody GBA!

Hmm. Front lit... does that mean it works like the Afterburner, with a frame of light around the screen?

ADVANCE WARS 2 ADVANCE WARS 2 ADVANCE FREAKIN' WARS 2 HOLY CRAP!

I can barely sit still to type!

Oh man, I screamed like a girly girl when I saw those words and pictures. THANK YOU!
Yeah, Advance Wars 2 made me wet the chair as well. I do think I'll have to try this GBA before I trade in the old model.
I just do not get the appeal of these things, or the games that are played on them. At all. Must be a kid thing.
Eh? Isn't that like saying, "I do not get the appeal of these 'movies' that are watched in these 'theaters'"?

There are games of every genre for the GBA. I feel pretty sure you could find one you liked...

Advance Wars is an amazing game for any age group.
Well, I have yet to see anything on a Gameboy that I couldn't find a much better version of on a pc or console.

I guess I've just never really found a need for portable, tiny-screened, 256-color Japanese games.

But then again, I'm an old fart.
I don't know why they can't just get it right the first time.

Dito to gravediggers comment about this sucker being way too small...that wider is better. We're not hobbits.

My only gripe after reading ign's article on this, is the lack of a headphone jack...that it'll be an add-on option (via the link cable input thingy). Most of the time I'm playing the gameboy, is in the privacy of my own little world while other people are doing their own thing. ie. on the airplane, bus, or in bed while the wife is sleeping.

I'll find out in march when it becomes available if it is too small for my hands...worse comes to worse, I'll just have to get around to afterburning my existing gba (or that other option that still hasn't shipped from ebworld).
Thems some pretty shitty ergonomics, there.
I don't know, it looks pretty cool. Need to hold one in my hands and play Advance Wars or Zelda before passing judgement...
Yeah, I can't wait to see what it feels like in person. As for your comment, Alain, I think I could play Advance Wars on anything... from a digital watch to a brick with an LCD strapped to it. Some other games, though, like F-Zero or Super Mario World 2... those, I'm not so sure about. Lots more motion and shifting required.

Damn that's an adorable design. But yeah, I'd be surprised if any adult could play it for long. The button area looks smaller than the original Gameboy, which was already painful at times.
A side by side comparison.

<img src="http://userpages.umbc.edu/~jratli1/images/newgba.jpg" alt="" />
Well, it's much bigger than I thought it was, but I'm still on the fence.
You beat me to it, Fist! I was on my way in to link that one.

Yes, it does look larger than I expected.

An article I saw claims it is 3"x3"x1" when closed.
We've been cooing over this in the office today. That chrome one looks like a handheld you can finally play in public without feeling like a twat.
It's sleek and it's good they fixed the lighting problem, but it just may be too damn small, especially the shoulder buttons.
Here's the power adapter/charger:

<img src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2003/news/01/07/gbasp_screen010.jpg" alt="" />
Here is the headphone jack adapter, which, oddly enough, uses the power adapter port. This means you can't use headphones and have it plugged in at the same time. Oh well. The self recharging batteries more than make up for it.
Gemini, are you sure about that? I would think the headphone jack plugs into the data port that we have on the current GBA, and the power plugs into that new port shown above.

I don't see how they'd share connections.

I definitely don't think it will be too small...plus the whole front-lit feature is just too good to pass up. I barely buy games for my current GBA just because it's so damn hard to see the games on it in a normally lit room in my house. My current GBA will be most definitely traded for this thing when it drops. The chrome colored one is very choice looking.
and of course, I just got a plain ol' GBA for Xmas. Oh well, aside from the light, I'm not that interested in it. I've already bought a battery pack (actually a set of 2, so there!), or I can use plain ol' NiMH batts. Plus, I agree, just from the pictures, it looks to be too small to hold comfortably.

Oh well, my Flood Light is perfectly acceptable to me.
hmmm.... with this "Sharper Image" style design, it looks like Nintendo is trying to go after an older crowd with this new GBA. The price point is $100 US.

Though kids will get their hands on it, this one doesn't look as toyish as other current GBA's....
I have every GameBoy iteration. I wouldn't mind buying this sucker. Becaise I have a severe problem with finding good damn light. Only sunlight will do with me.

That's the 2nd time I've seen Gameboy Light mentioned today... I've never heard of it.

Pictures?

Second gen (the slim design) Gameboy that's backlit, available in gold or silver. It's rad.
I can't find where I read it uses the same port. I'm pretty sure, however. It's been called the 'multipurpose port' several different places.
I don't have that. Mostly because I have never heard of it.

I do have the original one, GameBoy Pocket (LE Ice version with Battery indicator light which other versions of the Pocket didn't have), GameBoy Color (Clear Indigo), and GBA (Glacier). I also have the GameBoy Camera, Printer, e-reader, all the link cables, and GC-GBA link.
eh.......the original GBA is pretty small too. I had to get one of those grips because my hands would cramp up. Why don't they release a front lit version of the original design too?

thanks for the side-by-side pic. I'm slowly becoming excited about the new design. And I definitely hope there are the silver/platinum or jet black models available come march.

Still annoyed about the headphone jack, but I find myself never ever needing the link port anyways.
This thing looks so amazing, I'm buying it when it is released over here. I gotta say though, I feel sorry for Verbal, he just bought a GBA about 2 weeks ago.

The website Eurogamer put out first impressions of the new GBA...fret no more about thinking it will be too small...read on courtesy of Eurogamer:

-------------------------------------------------
Judging by the reaction from the forums, most of you seem to have come to the conclusion that it’s too small for western hands. The SP is just wider than the screen of the original GBA, and exactly the same depth when closed. It really is pocket sized, so some of you will wonder how it feels in the hands of an adult. Fret not. Unless you've got hands the size of shovels, you should be perfectly comfortable with the new design. Firstly the D-pad design should cure that age-old problem of ending up with ridges carved into your left thumb. In typical Nintendo style, something that you think shouldn't work, actually works a treat, and you'll find your thumb glides across the new shallower D-pad – presumably making games that require quick quarter and half rotations in direction far more playable, and enjoyable (Street Fighter Alpha 3, for example?).

The distance between the D-pad and the two buttons has also concerned a few of you. While we only had twenty minutes or so to play about with it, and while it did feel a little too close together compared to what we're used to, it shouldn't cause any discomfort. The weeny shoulder buttons, however, are tiny compared to any other gaming device you'll have ever come across. They do have a solid, responsive feel to them, and a quick blast on Metroid Fusion confirmed that they're easy to use as long as you adopt a hand positioning with your index fingers permanently resting by them. We still hanker after the four-button design, though. Why, Ninty, why?

I have the Super Game Boy, which you plug into your Super NES, and play game boy games in horrible color.

Here it is, from the ign story:

"The unit will not have a headphone jack; Nintendo has created a special adapter for the GBA SP that plugs into a brand-new multi-access port (also used for the AC adapter) which enables users to plug in standard headphones. Sold seperately, of course."
I guess that makes sense... you've gotta be able to use headphones and link cable at the same time.

Oh yea, I still have that one too.

I agree with the ergonomics concerns. If Nintendo wanted to make a truly comfortable handheld they would start with the Gamecube controller and adjust as necessary to fit a screen in the middle.

Dennis...I wouldn't worry much about the comfort of holding this bad boy...here's a quote from GameSpot's site about there hands on experience with it. Of course nothing is gonna convince you guys it's comfortable till you hold it yourself. But here's another example that should qualm these fears. Courtesy of GameSpot:

--------------------------------------------
"Before actually getting our hands on the new console, our only concerns--based on the photos that we'd seen--were that it might not be as comfortable as the existing model and that the shoulder buttons could prove awkward to use. Our fears were soon put to rest, however, since the new handheld is every bit as comfortable to hold as a Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Color, and it features shoulder buttons that, while much smaller than those on the GBA, are actually more comfortable to use. The directional pad and buttons have also been changed very slightly, and while they're practically flush with the surface of the console so as not to touch the screen when the flip-top is closed, they felt just as comfortable as those on previous Game Boy consoles, and we had no problems whatsoever playing with them."

i just like the idea that it can be folded up so not to scratch the screen.
You guys act like the GBA is comfortable to play to start with, the should buttons are freakin awakard to use and the buttons and d-pad too small

oh, and you can put me down for buying one of thouse, platinum please.
This is nitendo response to the "Afterburner" kit. They really should have listened to consumers who said they wanted/needed a backlight. I love my GBA. Being able to play one of the best "console" RPG's (Golden Sun) while getting my tires changed/waiting at DMV is awesome.

Anyways get an "afterburner" kit and youll be all set. The rechargable battery is tight thou.
I might have to pick myself up one of those. And get all the Zelda games for the GB color, and GB Advance!!!
Damn I'm gonna have to get one of those arnt I?
The only thing that's been keeping me from buying one of these is the fact it hasn't been back lit. And I don't want to man handle it to put one in myself. So now I can finally play those Zelda Oracle of Ages/ Seasons games once this get's released.
