New PS2 owner, suggestions please?

I will be picking up my console tomorrow or Tuesday. Yes, I'm a late bloomer. With so many games to choose from, what are the essential games to own? I plan to rent at first, but I can see owning a few if the repeat play is worth it. My favorite games are No One Lives Forever, Half-Life and The Devil Inside. My exposure is limited because I never wanted to overwhelm my PC with game stuff. Please help a genuine newbie.

GTA 3 and GTA: VICE CITY of course.

the GTA games. if you liked Devil Inside, you simply must buy Devil May Cry. it's excellent (if rather short), but the sequel is kinda crappy.

other good survival horror games are Fatal Frame and Silent Hill 2.

as far as First Person Shooters go, ehm, there's two James Bond games: Nightfire (the pretty damn good one) and Agent Under Fire (an ok one). Medal of Honor is also a great FPS.

*echo the GTA games (BOTH)*

Look at the Red Faction games for some FPS action too...the Geomod technology is extremely fun to play with, and they have a decent bot-AI as well.

If you have plans to get the network adapter you have to have SOCOM. That game gives hours upon hours of enjoyment in online play.

Wholeheartedly agree with the GTA and SOCOM advice. Great games. Also, take a look at Dynasty Warriors games. If you like that type of game, you'll probably like any of the Dynasty Warriors (I think there are 4 now).

I just bought Max Payne and Spy Hunter for $25 total at Best Buy.

They are having a great sale on their greatest hits. 2 games for $25 cannot be beat.

If you like arcade-style racing games, Burnout 2 is a total blast.

SpeedKings is a top game. Not sure if it's out over there yet.

Stealth/Assassin Games:
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

Other Repeatedly Named Classics:
Grand Theft Auto 3
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Final Fantasy X

And though I have yet to play, Devil May Cry 1/2 will be name dropped constantly, so I suggest those as well.

As for sports games, I have yet to really branch that way. I would lean towards "extreme" sports, as everything else is gay.

Also Gay:
The Getaway (Deny the Hype)
The Sims (Get your teeth drilled instead!)

Rez and ICO are two greatest, most beautiful games ever made. Buy them if you can find them.

Tony Hawk 3 or 4. If you dig FPSs Time Splitters 2 is great fun.

Star Chamber! "Gay" abuse!

I'd recommend Gran Turismo if you're into racing games. Another great title is Virtua Fighter 4.

And I'm sure you know that the PS2 is backwards compatible, so it can play your PS1 games as well.

The sweetest email I've received in years:

"Your confirmation number is here. Your Bestbuy.com order is now ready for pickup at our Topeka store."

YES! I know what I'm doing all day and night tonight.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I appreciate the help. My first stop after getting my precious is to go rent GTA and one or two others from the list.

Well, I ended up with a few great games yesterday. GTA:VC is absolutely amazing fun. I have to buy that or one of it's earlier versions. I also rented Tenchu 3. I need to work on my fighting skills, but the game is just beautiful. I purchased Devil May Cry and the Activision Anthology (45 games designed for the Atari 2600; I couldn't resist this throwback to my earliest home gaming experiences). I'm just sorry I waited so long to get a PS2. I'd probably be better at these games by now.

Dude...you need a Network Adapter and SOCOM for shooting action online....if you're into racing (arcade style) - Midnight Club II is sweet offline...plus it has blazing fast online play !!

...and of course GTA 3 and Vice City !!

Unavoidable purchases, mostly steals:

GTA III - 13.99 used
Silent Hill 2 - 14.99 used
NFL 2K3 - 14.99 used
The Thing - full price

I liked GTA:Vice very much when I rented it, but I think I prefer the locations for GTA III. The New York-ish streets make for better chases. The missions seem easier and earn money faster however.

GTA: Vice City
WWFSmackdown: Shut Your Mouth.
Resident Evil: Code Revonica
FFX
Devil May Cry
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
Tony Hawk 4

Both of the GTA games of course. I'm currently in love with Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. Ninja simulator that is taking over all of my thoughts, with tons of replay value. Also, if you're into music, Frequency, its shortly-coming sequel Amplitude, and if you can find it, Rez. All are wonderful titles, and will keep you glued to your TV for a long while.
Rez is wonderful post-nightclub, but doesn't stand up to a great deal of repeat play - nonetheless a truly original experience.

GTA3 or VC, obviously. Don't bother with The Getaway.

Although the FIFA series has improved since 98, you have to turn to Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (UK) / Winning Eleven Final Edition (US) if you like your footballs round. Oval, and EA's Madden 2003 is cracking.

No one has mentioned the fine snowboarder SSX or its sequel SSX: Tricky. Better than Tony Hawks, IMO - great visuals, thumping soundtrack, and amazing gameplay. I still pick up SSX after two and a bit years. The first, and arguably best value game I picked up on the PS2.

Fighting games - the Tekken series is still practically perfect, although the DOA and new Mortal Kombat titles have a justifiably strong following.

If you were a Wipeout fan, then the PS2 version might be a slight disappointment, but it still represents the best future racing experience for your dollar. Synapse frying speed and thunderous beats make it an immersive experience.

If space shooters are your thing, then Jedi Starfighter is a definite renter - make it a buy if you dig Star Wars generally.

I'm still to find a FPS on the PS2 that I really like. Timesplitters was OK on multiplayer, but with no story mode to speak of - and I still think that the gamepad is simply not suited to the genre. Avoid the Quake ports like the plague.
