Nintendo has today released the first gameplay information on the GameCube version of Mario Kart via its official E3 Web site. The game will boast a number of new features, the most obvious and intriguing of which is that each kart is manned not only by a driver, whose attributes will affect the handling of the kart, but also by a second character that will be responsible for handling power-up items and weapons. In addition to six regular items that are available no matter which character is riding shotgun, each character will have access to a further eight items that are specific to them. Players will be able to have their two characters switch seats on the fly, which could make for some quite tactical racing since every change will alter both the handling of the kart and the items available.

Also, according to a report in the latest issue of Famitsu, a number of Nintendo characters that haven't previously appeared in Mario Kart games will also be making up the numbers on the starting grid. The 16 characters confirmed for inclusion in Mario Kart to date are as follows:

Baby Luigi
Baby Mario
Birdo
Bowser
Bowser Jr.
Daisy
Diddy Kong
Donkey Kong
Koopa Paratroopa
Koopa Troopa
Luigi
Mario
Peach
Wario
Waluigi
Yoshi

Famitsu's report also hints at support for up to eight players using two GameCube consoles, although no more specific details are available at this time. We'll bring you more information on the GameCube version of Mario Kart when we report live from the E3 convention in LA next month.

Saw this on Gamespress. Very intriguing, I just hope they don't fuck it up like they did N64 MK.

YES! I want it now.

Am I the only one who didn't think Mario Kart 64 sucked?

Nope!

Mario Kart 64 is one of my absolute favorite games. Can't wait for this.

Err...

Fett, what do you think was fucked up about MK64?
I havent liked Mario games recently, but I did enjoy the latest Mario Party becusae one of their games was called "Mario Speedwagon". Get it?

They added all this new stuff, but the pure simpleness and FUN of MK on SNES was missing. It was more like Gran Turismo Mario.
Really, what's gonna be so different about this one? The passenger thing could mix it up, but still...I don't consider that a HUGE addition. We shall see, though.

But the SNES version is, and always will be, king.

I think the fun was as intact, if not increased, for MK64. Personally, I could play MK64 all day, particularly the Wario and Princess tracks.
Doh, I just realised you said 'who didn't think'. My brain is lame.
Yeah I noticed the fuck-up but didn't want to embarass you

Never played the N64 version, but the SNES game was one of the only racing games to hold my interest for a while (until I almost chucked it out of the window in frustration...fucking Rainbow Circuit). If this one is one tenth as fun, it's a winner.

I'm still much more excited about the announcement of Rogue Leader III though.
Nothing is worse than the pain of owning a track for three laps, only to have Koopa fly by you ten feet before the finish line.

I really dug the 64 version. The highway track was great.
Rogue Leader II... oh man.

BTW, had the first issue of mine in me hands today. Twas a weird feeling to see all of that there. But eh, you'll see soon.
Since you mention sit, I sent you my adress for you to send me the mag. Can't waid to read your prose.

And I'm making a topic about Rogue Leader II right now.

Mariokart 64 is one of my top three favorite games of all time. That link is dead but I am now getting ready to buy a gamecube. I still play Mariokart 64 a few times a week. I have for years.
MK64 is a fun game, but Mario Kart for SNES is fun and WAAAY more challenging.
If by challenging you mean "prone to horrible fucking cheating," I would agree with you.
No shit, some of the last few races are more about getting lucky with less cheating than any actual driving skill. I'll take MK64 or Diddy Kong Racing any day of the week.
MK64 was just as fond of cheating, and so is GBA Mario Kart. They're designed to make every race close, which is frustrating if by rights you should be creaming the CPU.
Loved MK64...still have it! Alas, I am an XBOX owner, so no new Mario Kart for me... wait, a good friend of mine has a GameCube. Yea!

Waluigi...classic!

It certainly makes winning far more difficult, but yes, it was insanely cheap when the Mario Bros. could turn on their invincibility whenever they chose.

Still, the original Mario Kart had the element of coins which determined your chances of spinning-out.

My anticipation for this game? Zero. Nintendo, as great as they can be, needs to get over themselves and start something new.
Wow, I never saw this coming, although it seems very logical. Leave it to nintendo to reinvent the kart racer, granted they did invent it. I think the strategy possibilities are through the roof being able to switch drivers and gunners on the fly. Using Toad acceleration while having bowser be your gunner to bring the pain.

Finally they are customizing the karts to the characters. Graphics look great. Not spectacular, but I know its mario kart game so I konw Im going to buy it. 2 Player co-op seems very interesting too. Battle mode better have bots and at least 8 battle stages.

The only thing worse than Nintendo updating its classics is Nintendo not updating its classics.

Nintendo speeds up Mario.
Thank fucking god.

I really didn't think they were going to but it looks like they came through.
The N64 version cheated like hell sometimes, but it's the kind of cheating you love to hate. I especially thought Peach was the biggest cheatingest bitch to ever put her plump little ass in a cart. But It did make nailing her ass with a shell all the more satisfying. Many times have I played this game in multi-mode with friends, drunk as hell and coming up with new, colorful curse words for every MK character. I don't think our resulting language was what the designers had in mind for this 'kid's' game. I'll buy the new one too.
YES!!!! It sounds like Nintendo pulled it off after all.

Game of the month in EGM, with scores of 10, 10, & 9.5.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Who scored it 9.5?!?! Probably the same cock sucker that fucked up the Zelda reviews. If everyone else gives it a 10 you conform and give it one too!

He scored it 9.5 because he felt that nintendo could have put in more battle arenas and he missed the ablitity to jump and drag items behind your cart which was in mario cart 64.

Awww, so I can't block with bananas?
Damn, now I have to get a bba for this fucking game. LAN party at my house around Thanksgiving!
I really liked the additions in 64. Part of the strategy was keeping something behind you, shooting the random green shell that you were dragging into the tailgating sucker behind you, jumping at the right time, etc. I will end up picking this up, and hopefully it will be just as good as the SNES and 64 versions were.
I will be picking up a Cube when this game hits. I can't wait.
Well, IGN sure wasn't a big fan. Gave it a 7.9 overall. That seemed generous after the review and final score (6,6,7,7 and one 8). I trust EGM much more than IGN but this is pretty disappointing none the less.

That review was baffling. I've been following IGN's coverage on the game, and not more than a week ago they did a write-up on what was essentially the final build and they absolutely creamed all over it. Official review comes out a few days later, and the game is suddenly "mediocre" and they tear some serious chunks out of it. WTF? Not like it matters though, I will slavishly hand over my $50 for this and would have done so even if the game discharged painful electric shocks via my Wavebird. I mean...it's fucking Mario Kart , man.
I was told that if you pre-order, you get a bonus disc with Mario Kart 64 on it (and possibly the original as well, I can't remember). That right there is worth the price of admission.
So, anybody have it yet? I'm thinking about picking up FFX2 and holding off on Mario until I see how Christmas plays out.
Great game, but a lot of it is balls. Remember, I am the biggest Mariokart fan period. I was so happy when I rang it up at the register I thought I was going to burst. The game is a ton of fun, but there are barely any levels, the battle levels are the size of a ritz cracker, and the gameplay is a little awkward.

Having said all that, it still rocks the fucking casbah.
Picked mine up a few minutes ago! It was short-shipped for some reason, so I scored #8 out of the 12 they got. Anyway, I pre-ordered mine, so it did come with the bonus disc. The disc has the full N64 version of Kart on it with a few other goodies. I'll report back with a short review on DD!

WOO HOO!
As of right now:

SNES MK: 9.0
N64 MK: 10.0
CUBE MK: 5.0
Holy shit, the demo disc has the original MK64? Really? I had read it was just a bunch of playable Nintendo demos...sweet Jesus, I *need* Kart 64. I need it.

Is there any way to get the demo disc if I didn't pre-order? Am I shit out of luck? Someone help.

What the hell?

You mind explaining the sudden switch?
The size of the battle levels is mindnumbingly awful. Just fucking awful. Plus, I expected many more tracks. It's so damn small. I haven't read the manual or anything yet, so if I get to unlock a few more places to race it will go up a few points.
I read there are 16 total tracks and four battle arenas, just like the previous versions. Not sure if that's accurate or not, though.

Played about five minutes of this at Best Buy yesterday, and it seemed fun. Gaming websites can bitch and whine about a lack of innovation, but I just want more of the same. The Mario Kart formula works for me, and I'm glad they're not drastically fucking with what works. Now if only I had more friends...
On my way home after purchasing Mariokart I called up all my friends that come over to play the 64 version and simply yelled "mariokart" and hung up. We play the 64 version all the time, and for a while we were playing it for hours every day. We put in the cube version, played it for forty minutes and now they are all sitting in my living room playing Tony Hawk Underground. That's basically the ultimate criticism. Shite, I am extremely dissapointed.

There are four battle arenas, but they are smaller than the ones for SNES and they are basically flat square terrain, or circular. It's bullshit. The 64 levels were much larger and more involving.
Have you tried "Bob-Omb Blast" yet, Bateman? All the reviews seemed to love that mode, so I'm eager to give it a shot.

I was never too big on the battle mode, so it won't bug me if the level design is boring. I wasn't exactly blown away by MK64's block forts or donut rings anyway. I'm getting this for the racing modes.
