Played about five minutes of this at Best Buy yesterday, and it seemed fun. Gaming websites can bitch and whine about a lack of innovation, but I just want more of the same. The Mario Kart formula works for me, and I'm glad they're not drastically fucking with what works. Now if only I had more friends...
What I can't understand is how they can bitch and whine at Mario Kart without batting an eye toward Tony Hawk and Madden every year.

Ahem...

My EB said there were shipping problems and that they wouldn't get it until tomorrow. I'm hella pissed.

The last Hawk I bought before Underground was 2. Your comparison is appropriate when you compare it to Madden, and not Hawk. THUG is a whole new breed, and it's much different from the previous games.

I'm probably the biggest TH supporter on the boards but I must say that THUG tries to be different but is very much the same. I love the shit out of it, don't get me wrong, but other than the shitty driving missions it isn't any different from the others.

Bah! Spoke too soon...there is NO Mario Kart 64 port on the new Double Dash demo disk. Damn it all! Sorry for the misinformation but I thought Nintendo was going to include it. They apparently pulled the idea a little while back.

I'm enjoying the game so far. Yeah, a few of the courses are kinda ho-hum (fuck YOU, Baby Park), but the cool mountain and ocean liner levels make up for it. Best of all, the play mechanics seem solid, and Nintendo (so far) seems to have eased off on the rubber band physics that made the first two Kart games a teeth-gnashing nightmare. Screw innovation...It's easy to play, it's fun, and it's got tons of personality. That's all I wanted.
For Kart, the leap from the SNES to the N64 was astounding. This leap (N64 to the 'Cube) wasn't really anything special. The game, while entertaining, isn't really groundbreaking like the N64 version was. However, it's still a blast, and multiplayer rules hard.

Can't wait to hook this up to multiple 'Cubes for some serious multi soon.
The Wario thunderdome track and the new Rainbow Road kick ass. I guess my biggest complaint is that when these new levels are fun, they're damn fun, which makes the mediocre levels (Dino Dino Jungle, Peach Beach, etc.) stand out even more. That and the fact that when I get hit by a red or green shell, my character comes to a dead stop, but when I shoot somebody else with a shell the sons of bitches seem to actually *speed up*.

But eh, whatever. It's a fun game.
It seems to me like this game is a lot more heavy on the items than the previous two Karts. May God have mercy on your soul if you don't come out of the gates in first place, or you'll be wading through a minefield of bananas and bombs in about 3 seconds. I realize that the item warfare is a part of the Mario Kart experience, but it seems like this game should've been titled Mario Kart: Omaha Beach Invasion!! at times. There needs to be an option to turn that shit down, like there is in Smash Bros. Melee.

The graphics are also pretty Dreamcast-tastic, but as usual I'm forced to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt because the gameplay is fucking fabulous. I agree with Slater, the Wario Thunderdome course rocks socks.
Great, now I look like an idiot for telling people the other disc had Mariokart 64 on it. I guess, like Lucy, I have a lot of "splaining to do" today.
I really want to get this, but I'm still unsure. Mario Kart on the SNES is still one of the best games ever made for me, but MK64 just didn't do it at all.

This version is a LOT closer to the N64 version than the Super NES version, Fett. If you didn't like Kart64, I'd give this one a rental before plunking down your cash. It's a lot more frantic than the original Kart, with a higher reliance on power-ups and multiplayer options.

Oh, and Bateman was right about one thing--the four battle levels are ASS. Bob-omb Blast is a lot of fun, but I wish I could play it in an arena that's not a gigantic fucking flat square.
Shine Thief is where it's at. We played it for two hours in my dorm last night and ended up not having enough time for TTT:EE.
That battle modes were always where it's at as far as I am concerned. It's still very dissapointing that I waited for this game for years and now I get these stupid flat squares to battle in. The racing modes are growing on me, and it's still a lot of fun to round up a bunch of good friends and play for hours--but the single player, and battle levels, are BALLS.

If you hated the 64 version, you will slaughter the first born of every employee at Nintendo after buying this one. It's Diet Mariokart 64.
I haven't played anything multiplayer yet, but as far as the single player mode, I'm dissappointed. There are the same amount of courses as there are for MK64. So far, I haven't lost a race, and the courses aren't as interesting as they were before. I LOVED MK64, but this seems like a weak rehash and nothing more. I love the inclusion of more playable characters and more vehicles to choose, but my favorite parts of MK64 were battle modes. From what it sounds like, everything is flat. The block board was my favorite, but it looks like I'll be disappointed when I get the buds together to play.
See, I *always* thought the N64 battle mode sucked (Get red three red shells, climb to top of block fort, fire shells, win. Yawn.). Maybe that's why I'm not disappointed with the Cube version.

And although it takes some getting used to, I'm really starting to like the new emphasis on offensive weapons. The N64 Kart got way too easy because all the drivers were so friggin' polite, and I could win every race without ever breaking a sweat. The Cube's new 100cc and 150cc races are absolute CHAOS, and I dig that.
I hope to agree with you. I blew through 50cc. I'm looking forward to more chaotic battles. I'll try them out this weekend. I can't play much tonight because I'm taking my A+ Certification exam tomorrow. Must pass.

My roomates in college and I all had similiar skill in M64. I guess that's why it worked for us. We all knew each other's strategies, and we had some fierce competition.
Yeah, 50cc was a cakewalk, but I had to really fight for my golds in 100cc, and 150cc is currently kicking my ass. So in that respect, at least, it's like the original Kart more than the 64 version. This bitch gets HARD.

Oh, and screw you, Nintendo, for ignoring online play. This game would rule the world if it was online.
I've been to 5 different stores looking for the broadband adapter. I just want to be able to hook up with my friends GameCube. I haven't been able to score one yet.
Try getting a gold trophy on 150cc. Criminy. The rainbow road course is near fucking impossible in 150cc.

store.nintendo.com

Ahem. This game is the fucking bomb.
Gah, 150 makes me want to kill. I can only beat special cup in 150, oddly enough. I feel like it's a game of luck though, whether or not 15 items hit me on the last lap. Frustrating.
THANK FUCKING ALLAH!

I beat a few of them in 150cc mode, and now I have a huge multiplayer level unlocked: Luigi's Mansion. So fucking happy.
So has anybody unlocked any new characters? I've gotten golds on everything except two 150cc cups, and not a single new character. There *are* new racers, right???
Never mind...I had forgotten to beat 100cc Special Cup. Just got two new characters. All I've got left is 150cc Special, and I'm guessing that unlocks the last battle arena and the mirrored courses. So I guess there were only two unlockable characters, which kinda sucks...

I was hoping for Boo, and the Hammer Bros. seemed like a given.
There's Boo and the Pirahna Plant left to come. And that crazy awards ceremony car.
Well, nevermind, then.

Cool. Boo rocks.
This is a challenging game. The loss of the "below fifth place cheat" (if you are getting a bad score, just drop to fifth and retry the track) makes things much tougher than the other two Mario Karts. As far as secret levels and characters, do you get them by winning specific cups (i.e. Star Cup 150 cc), or is it through points, or through aggregates (winning 5 gold cups, etc)?
Getting a gold on any cup will unlock either a vehicle, a battle arena, or a character. But usually just a vehicle.
Okay... got some more play time in. This is growing on me quite a bit.
Hmmm...I guess I will put this in for a rental...
The "catch-up" bulllshit has been eliminated; however, if the computer gets a lead on you, kiss his/her ass goodbye. You aren't catching up with them, even if you get nothing but blue shells. It's insane seeing how big of a lead the computer gets, while you are getting destroyed by red and green shells in 7th place.

This is on 150cc of course...fucking brutal!
My one real disappointment is that the weapons are all weighted toward moving up one or two positions at best. If you fall to eighth place, there's really no way to save your ass. In Kart64, a star, lightning bolt or blue shell could almost always move you up a few spots. Here it seems like unless the other characters are within eye sight, the mega-weapons are pretty useless.

If you get tired of that worthless, no-Kart64-havin' demo disc, just send it my way so I can get the blasted Fire Emblem bonuses, please.
picked up my copy about 2 1/2 hours ago, and I've got Gold trophies for all four circuits up to 100cc. I'm working on 150cc and Special Cup now.

Great game!

Maybe too easy though?
And too few features...

I dare you to say that when trying to get the All Cup Race gold in in mirror mode.
Yeah this was a bit too easy. I finished the game 100% in 2 days. Some parts were a little difficult but I'd really like a little more challenge than what I got.

Not that its a detriment to the game, mind you. I played MK64 for 2 years after beating it. But I AM dissapointed with the battle modes. Bah.
Co-op mode is incredible.
I'm still going for the gold on the Star Cup on 150cc. Taking my time, no rush. Plus, my wife loves Kart, so we both play the Grand Prix together. Helps by removing one of the cheating-assed computer players.

The only way I was able to get that gold was to have my roommate participate in the cup as well, as he stole enough points from cocksucking Wario to allow me to win. Petey Piranha and King Boo own.
Any ATL Locals in this thread who have that pre-order bonus disc?
Cock-sucking, cheating-assed computer. I FINALLY beat the last level on 150cc...I've unlocked the All-Cup race. It was fun beating the shit out of the computer on 50cc on that.

Jesus the computer is a bastard on this game.
God, this game gets SO easy after you unlock Toad's go-kart. That little blue bastard shaved an easy eight or nine seconds off all my lap times, and I beat all the All Cups and all the Mirror races in a single afternoon.

Still a fun game, but more tracks would have been nice.
When do you unlock Toad's Kart?
Um...I don't really remember. Maybe Star Cup 150cc?
I think its actually Special Cup 100cc.

So far Double Dash is better than I expected but not nearly as good as it should have been. The tracks are fun, but thats only because the core gameplay is fun (even that shitty oval track, Baby Park, is fun to race on). There should have been more 'going on'. Dino-Dino Jungle should have had dinosaurs all OVER the fucking place, in the sky, running around, whatever. It feels like something from Diddy Kong Racing as is. The Cruise Liner is a wasted idea, as is Toad City or whatever that course was called. It seems like every level is built around a single gimmik, and the rest of the map around it is kind of bleh...

The battle levels are a MAJOR dissapointment. They work well enough, but theres nothing like Block Fort or Double Decker. They are either too small (Block City), too weird (Cookie Land) or too fucking boring (Gamecube). I just unlocked Luigi's Mansion, and its kind of like a small version of Double Decker....so maybe that'll be ok. The last level you get is supposed to be pretty good too(?)

I like the new Special weapons (fireball, chain-chomp, bob-omb...all kickass), but items overall feel kind of ruined otherwise. Shells dont do as much damage as they used to (I used to feel like God with 3 red shells), and generally dont seem at all dangerous. Green shells cant be aimed as well, as they kind of fire off to the side instead of straight ahead (and why are the shells so fucking BIG??) Leader shells are useless now, since I dont think they can hit anyone on the way to the leader (used to be you could hit 3 or 4 people with that one).

2-People in a kart I have kinda mixed feelings about. Mostly its a cool idea, and introduces a fun element of strategy with item-management....but it also makes it needlessly complex. I've had little luck introducing people to the game, as they get frustrated with having to manage characters ("how do i know who has what, how do i know what item they have, blahblahblahblahblah")
I think Mario Kart 64 hit a perfect balance with being able to hold items on the back of your kart for defense (I fucking MISS my spinning shell-shield!!!) and another as a backup.

But I still like this game a LOT because its fucking MARIO KART! I'll enjoy it for a few years (or another 6...) and hope Nintendo tries a little harder next time.
I LOVE Baby Park. Yeah, it's a tiny track, but the extra laps make up for it. The sheer number of different items that get on the track at any one time makes it anyone's race - I've dropped from 1st to 8th because of a red shell or something right towards the end.

I also miss my shields. They did address the problem of getting hit from behind with that early warning system, so you can use a turtle shell to take it out in the nick of time, but I didn't have to think about the shield.

Baby Park 0wnz, but it's not as much a "race" as it is a "street fight".
100cc Special Cup is making mr cry like a baby. Get less than 2nd place once, and you're fucked for the whole thing. I must've started this god damned thing over at leat 15 times already. Can anyone tell me how much ass the Parade Cart kicks?
The parade car sucks. But you get that for beating All Cup Race is Mirror Mode, not for any of the races in 100cc. Just keep plugging away with Yoshi and the Koopa Paratrooper in the Yoshimobile until you finally unlock Toad's car, and then proceed to kick EVERYBODY's ass with the Toadster.
I ended up winning by the skin of my teeth using the Koopa Paratrooper/Yoshi combo with the pink buggy. Now I have the Toadster and easily beat Mushroom Cup 150cc. Star Cup is fucking brutal though, I usually always get screwed at the end of the road level by some asshole with a red shell even if I take the purple road shortcut
