Help Me Pick Out A New Game System

Hey, folks. I'm a huge movie geek who enjoys video games, but isn't up on which system is better than the rest. This is what I know: I want something that has a decent selection of games, and really want to pick up the LOTR games, "Enter The Matrix," and "Knights of the Old Republic"; I'd like the system to have a decent DVD player; and I'd like to know that my particular system won't pull a Dreamcast and go belly up.

Advice, please!

You can only get Knights of the Old Republic on the XBOX. The Two Towers game is on it too as well as the other multi-platform game, Enter the Matrix. The XBOX won't go belly up. Think about it, it is made my Microsoft. (Wait, scratch that thought). Anyway, it doesn't look like Microsoft will stop backing the console like Sega did with the Dreamcast (which still saddens me). As for the DVD player, none of the consoles are as good as a decent stand-alone DVD player. With that in mind, I brought the XBOX (I also have all of the other consoles) to act as the DVD player and game system for my dorm room. I did this because of KOTR, Halo, and XBOX Live. I also wasn't going to pay for another DVD player.

If you want some more help deciding, just search for other threads and look up some other opinions.

You will also be able to get KOTR on the PC. You can also have a DVD player for that as well. Enter the Matrix is also on the PC. Hell, even Halo is coming. You got your XBOX right there.

Yeah, but my computer sucks; and certain games (like the EA LOTR games) aren't made for the PC. It's sad, I know, but I'm such a whore for all things LOTR.

So XBox has the best DVD player, huh? Better than Game Cube or PS2? Problem is, I hate the controller for XBox, because it's just so damn clunky.

I always heard PS2 was the best of the lot. Is this untrue?

Thanks for letting me ask all these seemingly stupid-ass questions. When it comes to movies, I'm your man. When it comes to game consoles, I'm a moron.

I'm not saying that the XBOX has the best DVD player. Also, the GameCube doesn't have a DVD player.

The reason I brought my XBOX instead of my GameCube or PS2 was because I had just invested about $200 in games and XBOX Live, and that Live account would have gone to waste.

But with the games you mentioned, the XBOX seems to be the best best. But if you are still unsure, and rightly so, go and look in other threads in this forum. Or go on the internet and look at some reviews of games for each platform.

Oh yea. The default controller (the one that comes with the XBOX) is now the smaller XBOX Controller S.

The original one is, but all new X-Boxs come with the newer "S" controller that is much more compact than the first-gen behemoth. Try to get your hands on one if you see it in a gamimg store, so you can see the difference. It feels more like a GC controller, except without the oddly shaped buttons.

By the way, the GC doesn't play DVDs.

If you have a broadband connection to the Internet, then I would definitely recommend getting an X-Box. X-box Live greatly increases the replay value of those Live-enabled games, since you can play against other players over the Internet, AND you can trash-talk, thanks to the in-game voice support.

*edit - Agent 86 beats me to the punch, which would explain why he's never on Live when I'm on.

Thanks, Chow; but I actually just scored a PS2 this afternoon. I settled on Playstation mostly because I have a lot of old PS1 games that can still be played; and also because it seems like just about all the games I'm interested (except for KOTOR) are being released for this system.

Picked up LOTR: The Two Towers and Grand Theft Auto III. Fun, fun stuff. I'd never played either one before, and I'm enjoying the hell out of both.

Thanks for everyone who offered advice!

Good choice on the PS2, I think it has the better dvd player for one since you don't have to waste $30 on a dvd remote to use the dvd player like you do on the X-Box. I'm not saying X-Box is a bad system either, I love my X-Box but I love my PS2 more. Mainly because I can play my old Playstation games on it and it has a better game selection in my opinion. The one draw back is no X-Box live, it has online games but they aren't as good.

Anyway, for some game selections, I recomend not getting Enter the Matrix, I hated it but that's only my opinion.
Some recomendations:
Metal Gear Solid 2
GTA Vice City
Final Fantasy X
Jak and Daxter, Jak 2 comes out in October too
Red Faction
Devil May Cry
Maximo
Dynasty Warriors 4

Enjoy your PS2

I was thinking about picking up Devil May Cry, Samurai X; but what's the beef with Enter The Matrix? I thought it was supposed to be the coolest game of the year.

It's very likely that I'll be (finally) entering the game console market (maybe as early as Monday night) as an early birthday present for my son.

Leaning toward the PS2, after a session with Xymog's system this past weekend, visiting with a few folks, and looking at the game selections this afternoon.

is it too late to sway you from the darkside and impress upon you the greatness that is KOTOR, Midtown Madness 3 Online-Play, and Halo?

Weird how the system I once loathed, for no apparent reason (other than to hate MS for hatings' sake), has become my favorite console second only to the Dreamcast.

If there's any truth to the rumors we may yet see the GTA's on the x-box soon enough, no need to get a ps2...is there?

mheh, I'm a shill god dammit.
