Nintendo Fusion Concert Recap

Fuck the music...here's the real stuff:

F-ZERO: Seemed fun, but the control was too twitchy. Even on the basic first level, I could barely keep my ship from ramming into the sides of the course. I can already tell that this is a game I will suck at, but I'm eager to play more. The visuals are jaw-dropping.

SOUL CALIBER II: Typical SC. Seemed fairly similar to the Dreamcast original, but it's been a while since I've played that one. Apparently lots of depth and strategy, but I beat the first three enemies just by button mashing. Withholding judgement.

STAR WARS REBEL STRIKE: Crap. The only level on display was the Hoth "on foot level", which seemed like a bad rip of Robotron. Run around a plain white field, shoot some tiny stormtroopers, destroy AT-ATs. The much hyped "destroy Walkers just like in the movie!" feature was worthless--Get underneath a Walker, press a button for your cable, slash once, press another button to throw a grenade. From a cinematic standpoint, it's nice. From a gameplay standpoint, it's "Dragon's Lair" shit. Not impressed.

VIEWTIFUL JOE: Seemed fun, if shallow. The graphics and style were great, but even the six minute demo felt repetitive by the end. Slow down time, punch someone. Slow down time, kick someone. Hopefully later levels will get more complex than this, because right now it's "River City Ransom" with slow motion.

BILLY HATCHER: Ehhh. A typical cutesy platformer. Rolling the eggs was annoying, and the pastel color scheme made my eyes bleed. Seemed cute for kids, but I can't imagine buying and playing this with Jak II and Ratchet II on the horizon. Pretty pedestrian.

Sadly, Mario Kart Double Dash was NOT on display in playable form.

On the whole, Nintendo's next wave of big hitters left me more than a little unimpressed, although both F-Zero and Viewtiful Joe have potential.

Did you play F-zero with a Wavebird wireless controller? The stick on that is much more sensitive, and more difficult to make the delicate maneuvers with. The game is perfect with the stick on the default Nintendo controller.

Since it was a public event, I doubt it was the wireless controller, but those ones they had for public use must have been beat to shit. The state of the analog stick is crucial for this game. I know, it sounds pretty anal, but to get a lot of enjoyment from this game you have to be hardcore into it.

They actually kicked ass, even though I still can't spell their name. Surprised the hell out of me, since I thought their music was average at best. But they put on one helluva show. Their lead singer--a hottie, by the way--sang her lil' heart out, and the music was LOUD. Possibly the loudest concert I've ever been to, and that includes Metallica, Tool, NIN, Stabbing Westward, and basically every other metal act from the last decade. My ears are still kinda numb even now, 24 hours later.

So although I'd love to bitch about their prepackaged, ultra-slick manufacturing psuedopop, I had a good time listening to 'em.

I thought the games and music were mostly crap, with the exception of Evanescence. They did put on a good show, and as generic as their music is, Amy Lee is a hottie without being a complete airhead, and they presented it in a competent way.

I played Soul Caliber for a few minutes, discovered that I hate the Gamecube controller, and was also able to kick ass by mashing random buttons. I didn't hang around the games for very long. I spent most of the event running between my friends' place in the crowd and the beer kiosks. I also ran a little sociology experiment by intentionally violating concert goers' personal space and noting their reactions. It killed time while Cold was laming up the stage.
